    Chp officer/pilot killed in plane crash imperial county

    IMPERIAL, Calif. -- Authorities say a California Highway Patrol plane has crashed in Imperial County near the San Diego County border, killing the pilot.

    Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says search crews found the wreckage of the Cessna 206 about 4:45 p.m. Friday, about 12 miles northeast of Agua Caliente Springs. The pilot, the only person on board, was killed.

    Gregor says the pilot last contacted the CHP base at 10:24 a.m. and reported he was over Imperial.

    The cause of the crash is under investigation.

    Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
    Through the great spaces of the sky.
    Be with the travelers in the air,
    In darkening storms or sunlight fair;
    Oh, hear us when we lift our prayer,
    For those in peril in the air!

    -- verse from Naval Hymn (Eternal Father Strong to Save)
