How dreadful. I am so sorry. My daughter was in Kandahar last year and now has post-traumatic stress. Australia has lost 11 soldiers in Afghanistan and 1 in Iraq. Many have lost limbs, but the government has not allowed publication of these facts.

Please do not consider any anti-government rhetoric in this thread. My friend has dedicated his whole life to the government as I have mine... and as I did, he volunteered to go to the mid-east to do his part.

Switch, I too lost someone in the LE field recently who was taken violently. I have been able to take comfort in the fact that she is gone only from this earth, but is with our Heavenly Father in all the splendor deserved. You, and your fallen's friends and family will be in my nightly prayers tonight in hopes that you too will be able to find this very same peace and be able to be comforted by the fact that though this Peacekeeper may be gone from our earth, he is gone only from our earth and can now enjoy an eternity with our Father.

Many things aren't reported in the American media, either. Freedom of speech in Australia exists to a great extent because there is no law inhibiting it. Restrictions may include obscenity and defamation, as you know. When sensationalistic current affairs programs ambush military leaders and there is no information forthcoming, then that is their (the military's) prerogative and does not culminate in the broad-brushing of a nation. Essentially free speech comes from facts, not rumours, and the intention must be to not do harm but be constructive. This isn't the right time to discuss such views and it is a disservice to the memory of a fallen colleague.

A very good friend of mine is a retired CIA operative. He was recruited out of the 101st Airborne just after Korea and served during the Cold War going back behind the Iron Curtain numerous times to rescue families of defectors plus Lord only knows what else he did.. Those guys are fearless, no doubt about it.

My deepest and most sincere condolences and prayers to his family and friends.
