PENN HILLS, Pa. -- A Penn Hills police officer was shot to death while responding to a call at a house where another person was also killed on Sunday night, according to Allegheny County investigators, but the circumstances surrounding the deaths are still unclear.
County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said the Penn Hills officer was shot with some sort of rifle -- possibly a high-powered assault-style weapon -- while he was still in his car after arriving at 201 Johnston Road at about 8:30 p.m.
As black wreaths were being placed outside the Penn Hills police station on Frankstown Road early Monday morning, Chief Howard Burton identified the slain officer from his department as 31-year-old Michael Crawshaw.
Officer Michael Crawshaw was 1 of 2 people killed in a Penn Hills shooting.
Burton said Crawshaw responded to a call that went to county 911 about someone inside a house with a gun. Crawshaw properly followed protocol by parking his car a few doors away from the scene and calling for backup, but while he was on his radio, someone walked up to the car and shot him, Burton said.
Crawshaw was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner's office identified the second body at the crime scene -- which is located just off Frankstown -- as 40-year-old Danyal Morton of Pittsburgh. Police have yet to establish a motive for Morton's death and are reviewing 911 tapes to piece all of the night's events together.
A "be on the lookout" alert was sent for a dark green Jeep Cherokee after the shooting. That alert has been canceled, and a vehicle matching the description was recovered and taken to county police headquarters on a flatbed truck.
The Jeep alert also mentioned a man's name, but that man -- who is from Clairton -- quickly went to his local police department and said he had no involvement with the shootings and was released.
Channel 4 Action News' Ari Hait reported that Penn Hills police said officers are interviewing several people at police headquarters about the shooting, but no suspect is in custody.
Penn Hills borders the city of Pittsburgh. Several officers from the Pittsburgh Police Bureau's Zone 5 station worked the crime scene with Penn Hills and Allegheny County police on Sunday night.
Crawshaw was originally from the Shaler/Glenshaw area and worked for the University of Pittsburgh Police Department before moving to Penn Hills. He was not married and did not have children, Burton said.
Crawshaw is the fourth police officer to be killed on the job this year in Allegheny County.
Officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo, all of the Pittsburgh Police Bureau, were shot dead on a domestic call in the city's Stanton Heights neighborhood on April 4. The suspect in that case, 23-year-old Richard Poplawski, is awaiting trial on three counts of homicide.
Crawshaw is the first Penn Hills police officer to be killed on the job in 37 years.
In 1972 Sgt. William Schrott and Officer Bartley Connolly were killed while working security detail at a mall.
