COURTLAND, VA - A Southampton County Sheriff's deputy died in a vehicle accident Saturday morning while responding to a service call.
Deputy Christopher Ray was in a patrol car that struck a tree on that had fallen across General Thomas Highway outside Franklin, according to a news release from the Southampton County Sheriff's Department.
Ray, 22, joined the Southampton County Sheriff's Office June 1 after graduating from Radford University, where he majored in criminal justice. He worked as an intern with the Sheriffs Department during the summer of 2008, according to the release.
Another deputy, Jason Brinkley, was also involved in the accident. Brinkley suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.
The release offered the Department's thoughts and prayers to Ray and Brinkley's family.
The accident is being investigated by the Virginia State Police.
