CHEHALIS, Wash. - Sheriffs are supposed to be tough guys, but it wasn't easy for Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield to talk about Stephen "Mike" Gallagher.
"Deputy Gallagher died in the line of duty doing what he loved, doing what he was very good at, and that is making a difference on people's lives that he touched," said a tearful Mansfield.
Gallagher died Tuesday night after hitting an elk with his Lewis County car near Packwood Monday night. He was on his way to help a fellow deputy responding to a domestic violence call.
