Trooper Lumley died as a result of injuries sustained the previous night when his patrol car collided with a vehicle being pursued by other agencies. The pursuit started in Clayton County and proceeded through Henry County into Spalding County, where Trooper Lumley joined in. The pursuit ended when the suspect's vehicle crashed into Trooper Lumley's vehicle on Georgia 16. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Trooper Lumley was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
Trooper Lumley had served with the Georgia State Patrol for 2.5 years and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
