Indiana State Trooper Killed In Crash

State police don't know cause of trooper's fatal crash

    11:19 AM January 28, 2008

ROCHESTER, Ind. — State police did not know today what caused a trooper’s car to veer off U.S. 31 in northern Indiana and strike a tree, killing him.

Trooper Daniel Barrett, 25, of Logansport was traveling northbound near the Fulton-Marshall county line about 10:45 p.m. Sunday when his patrol car went off the highway and struck a tree with the driver’s side door. He was pronounced dead at the scene of massive trauma.
There was no ice on the road at the time of the crash about 30 miles south of South Bend, state police Sgt. Kim Riley said today.

“It was wet, but it was not slick at the time,” Riley said. “We are speculating at this time that it is not the cause.”

Barrett had started his shift at 4 p.m. and was scheduled to work until 2:45 a.m. Monday, Riley said.

Barrett was a 2002 graduate of Logansport High School. He attended criminal justice courses at Indiana University and Ivy Tech. Barrett was assigned to patrol primarily in Fulton County, about 90 miles north of Indianapolis.

Barrett was a member of the 67th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy which graduated July 6, 2007. He is the 43rd Indiana State Police Officer to die in the line of duty.
