CORPUS CHRISTI — A Corpus Christi police officer died Sunday of injuries related to an automobile accident while he was on the way to an assault call.
Matthew Thebeau, 25, who had been with the department for nearly two years, was headed south on State Highway 286 near Baldwin Boulevard at about 2:34 a.m. when he hit a center barricade. Thebeau was ejected from his patrol car and landed in the northbound lane of traffic and was struck by at least one vehicle, a statement released by police officials Sunday, said.
Thebeau was transported to Christus Spohn Memorial hospital where he was pronounced dead. An investigation still is underway.
