Officer Shot - Huntsville AL

Shooting happened about 2 hours ago. Officer was on a wreck and was impounding a vehicle when he was shot in the head. Offender is in custody. Officer is in surgery right now, is not expected to make it. Officer is 37 years old married and has 5 kids.

Will post more as I get it.

Last word I was given just a second ago was, he is out of surgery and has no brain activity. He is on life support to keep him alive. Offender used a 22cal pistol..... 00:15 Dec 15th

Huntsville Police say Officer William Eric Freeman died Saturday morning, at 9:38am.

He was shot Friday night at the corner of Bailey Cove Road and Weatherly Road in southeast Huntsville, as he tried to arrest a man.

That man is in custody, and is charged with capital murder.

Rex Reynolds, Huntsville's Director of Public Safety, urged people to pray for Freeman's family. Freeman is a father of five and a three-year veteran of the Huntsville Police Department.

Flags are at half-staff at the Metro Jail in honor of Freeman.

Chaplains are counseling Huntsville police officers to help calm their emotions.

Yea my phone blew up this morning when he passed away, it's a sad thing for a father of 5 to have his life taken from him this close to christmas. I feel for those familes.

Ok, so I found out a little more this afternoon. Officer Freeman was responding to a drunk that had hit a retired officer's vehicle. When Officer Freeman went on scene the offender was apparently attempting to run the retired officer over.

Officer Freeman approached the intoxicated male and as the offender exited his vehicle he pulled the weapon from his pocket and fired. In this case there were several heroes involved. After Officer Freeman was shot in the head, the retired officer and another citizen along with another responding officer tackled the offender and took the weapon.

It warms my heart to see citizens stepping up to do what’s right and help the downed officer.


I’ll pass along the arrangements when I get them. There is also a fund set up in his honor at any north Alabama Redstone Federal Credit Union.

Viewing: Monday December 17th - 11am to 8pm @ Bethlehem Baptist Church

Funeral: Tuesday December 18th - 11am @ Bethlehem Baptist Church

Burial: Tuesday December 18th - Following the funeral, burial will be at Stateline cemetery
