An accident on Interstate-29 has killed a Moody County Deputy Sheriff late this afternoon.

Authorities say late this afternoon the deputy had a car pulled over on 1-29 near the ward exit, south of Brookings. The driver refused to sign the citation and as the deputy was preparing to arrest the driver,an oncoming car hit and killed the deputy.

I will post more info on this as it becomes available.

I hope th driver that refused to sign the cite feels like an a**hole. The road is no place to dispute a cite. Take it to a judge.

Accident Kills Moody County Deputy Sheriff

Law enforcement officers are used to responding to accidents, especially during winter weather. But late Monday afternoon, they were called to an crash involving one of their own.

Just after four, Moody County Deputy William Davis died while ticketing a driver on Interstate 29, just north of the Nunda-Ward exit.

Trooper Josh Olson says, "He was placing a male individual under arrest. Another vehicle traveling northbound lost control on the bridge and began to slide, struck the deputy and the deputy was fatally injured."

Davis had responded to an accident in the northbound lane of I-29. A truck hit a bridge and Davis was writing him a ticket for over driving the conditions.

Olson adds, "My understanding was the individual driving the pick up truck was going to be cited and he was refusing to sign the citation so he was going to be placed under arrest for that."

As Davis was arresting the pick up driver along side the interstate, A car slid sideways, slammed into him and killed him almost instantly. Davis, who had been with law enforcement for over 20 years, was thinking about retiring in the next year or two.

The driver of the car, a woman from Illinois, was not hurt. Her husband and two small children who were in the car with her, were also okay.

After the accident, the driver of the pickup, who was not hurt, did sign his ticket. Charges are pending against the driver of the car that hit and killed Davis.

That's very sad indeed. I can't imagine how everyone involved in this must feel. The driver for not signing his citation was responsible for the officer being there at the moment the van took slide. The woman driving the van must feel horrible. I can imagine the horror in her children's eyes as they watched his body tumble to the ground. The heart ache her husband must feel. I hope God is with them all. This is also a good example of why it is best to conduct your stop from the passenger side window.
