A local deputy was killed early this morning in the line of duty. Grief counselors are helping workers at the Clare County Sheriff's Department (Michigan) deal with the sudden loss of Kevin Sherwood. He was killed around 1:00 am responding to a call about a driver going the wrong way on U.S. 127 near Hatton Road. The driver hit Sherwood's car head-in, killing himself and the deputy instantly. Sherwood is the first police officer ever killed in the line of duty in Clare County. Sheriff's Departments around northern Michigan are mourning the loss of Deputy Sherwood.
Deputy Sherwood was a 9 year veteran. Clare County is just north of Isabella County where I work. Its sad when something like this happens this close to home.
Not clear yet if the other driver was intoxicated, I heard he was 65 years old.
