very sad day in my hometown

A 30-year-veteran of the Waterloo Police Department and his wife, a former police dispatcher have been shot and killed.

52-year-old Richard Harned and 48-year-old Suzanne Harned were both found dead in their home on Cedar Heights Drive in Cedar Falls last night.

Shortly after ten o'clock last night, neighbors recall hearing the victim's dog barking at their home. Then around eleven o'clock neighbors report hearing firecracker sounds that could have been gunshots. Shortly after 12:30 this morning police arrived at the home and discovered the murder scene, a husband and wife dead.

We have since learned the alleged killer is her 26 year old son from a previous marriage. Sounds like his 12 yr. old daughter was staying with Officer Harned and Sue - and at one point h e took the girl to another house - that's where the S.W.A.T team was called out and got him. He is now i n jail under a 2 million dollar bond.

This is the first officer death in our area for about 22 years. It's just really a tragedy.
Jim Reed: You just have to know how to arrest them and still make them like you. We call it technique.
