Accused cop killer Omar Marti was slain by sheriff's deputies in Florida on Sunday after leading authorities on a 30-mile car chase that ended in a hail of gunfire.
In a last-ditch effort to fend off authorities from the Hernando and Sumter county sheriff's departments, the 23-year-old Passaic man emerged from his disabled vehicle firing several weapons.
Six deputies returned shots, and Marti was struck in the chest multiple times, authorities said. Marti was airlifted to a Florida hospital, where he was pronounced dead. None of the deputies was injured.
Police are convinced that Marti was responsible for killing Fair Lawn Police Officer Mary Ann Collura and wounding Clifton Officer Steven Farrell, and are not surprised he chose to end the chase in such a fashion, said Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli
