Radiation reading sites for those on the left coast.

I thought it might be helpful if you are interested in keeping your own eye on radiation levels. The media will no doubt will be frothing at the mouth with "NEWS " (hype?) on it. This site
is civilian run monitoring civilian and public counters. They have mapped out all of the known radiation sites in America (when you look on the map for Oregon you will see the storage facility on the Columbia for example), and round symbols for the monitored counters. A normal back ground radiation reading is between 30 and 60 CPM. Currently, the one in the Gorge is reading 33 at last check and California is reading lower than that. An alert level is 100 CPM. I thought this site might be more than just monitor our exposures from Japan but as a general checkup for peace of mind during less active times.

Wow. A major earthquake on the east coast would be devastating.

You actually have more to worry about taking a commercial flight across CONUS than anything coming from Japan as far as radiation goes.

Hell, you work in a medical enviornment and I would suspect it is more dangerous there for radation than any of us are facing? (Sorry for using the word hell if it offends anyone.)

Probably true, but unlike our good buddy, Trip, I don't buy everything our government sells either.

I should have clarified that I meant anything coming across the Pacific from Japan.

It was recently on the news that radiation from Japan was detected in Arizona. A bunch of people were freaking out listening/reading the headlines instead of paying attention to the crux of the story. What irritates me are the paranoids running in circles screaming the sky is falling...which wastes good oxygen of those who choose to be prepared instead of paranoid.

Sometimes I want to do what they showed in bunches of the old time movies when a good hard slap across the face was the common cure for panic.

I'm betting we will soon hear about Iodine overdose and overexposure because of the panic.

I saw a picture of a radiation detector in Japan. They were showing how they are detectin radiation from the plant. They didn't explain what the viewer was seeing, just that it was "radiation". A quick calculation of that dose showed that they were reading an amount that, if accumulated over a year, would be less than the dose received on one transatlantic flight. It's a lot less than the natural background radiation variances. And WAY, WAY below the amount of radiation necessary to even be detectable in a population as a cancer agent.

Even the dumbass surgeon general of Obama's, Regina Benjamin originally said that taking them "wasn't a bad idea".

There was a short firestorm of other doctors saying not to, I don't know if she ever withdrew that statement or not.

Ok, I haven't wrapped myself in tinfoil...yet. And, I don't believe we will see folks on the west coast losing their hair and vomiting violently.

However, it ain't over yet. The big worry comes months or even years after exposure, and yes I am one of the skeptics who does not believe everything the US Govt. tells us and definitely not what the Japanese Govt. is saying (which is not much). In ten years when the cancer rate skyrockets they will blame it on second hand smoke or that damm red meat.

They are still waiting for Chernobyl to show increased deaths. So far, nothing.

In fact, the effect of fear mongering has increased suicides and abortions but not cancer.

The company that I work for moves nuclear medicine across the country. We have planes that are exempted from Federal regs that just move nukes. I unload and load these planes. I can guarentee you that I get more radiation from work than anyone in this country will get from Japan.

This should be proof positive that you can defeat radiation poisoning by consuming mass quantities of beer!
