What about the radiation leaking into the ocean....no effect on the fish? What happens when it drifts out to the open sea? What about birds flying over it. Did they get the message it is a no fly zone? Where will they end up? And, Norm I never said a mother of three in Indiana would feel the effect of this. I'm just saying I'm not all that eager nor gulllible to believe everything the Govt's say. Especially when there are twenty three reactors just like the ones in Japan in the US. And, only now when they have had a disaster is our Govt. starting to take a new look at the safety of these reactors.

That happened in 1986 though and a hell of a lot of people died from that. Who knows how many because the pro nuclear power groups grossly understate the numbers and the anti's inflate them. But the lowest figure I found was still 4,000 and the highest was nearly a million. But even the lowest isn't a number to be sneezed at and no doubt the numbers are higher than that. The USSR has a long history of covering itself by lying.

I must admit that the thought of birds flying over the incident and then migrating across the ocean to contaminate us never crossed my mind.

I guess I figured if the birds got that much contamination, they would have croaked from acute radiation poisoning before they got to Arizona. But then again, I'm no expert on the subject.

I'll have to inquire at our EOC to see if radiation from migrating Japanese birds is listed in the ICS operational plans.

Note to self; do not eat or pet any Japanese birds.

Wow I think, I'm in trouble. At work, and home, and well everywhere around here, I am constantly exposed to radiation levels in excess of 120 CPM, and that is just background radiation. All of the radiation is background radiation since we have no major sources of radiation in the area.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.

Knowing that we are more likely to die or be mangled in a car crash from anything else is scary enough. Now we have to worry about this. The stress is becoming overwhelming.

Wear a big tinfoil hat, long sleeve shirts, gloves...don't drink the water, don't eat the fish, and beware the birds! The end is near!

Well, I have to leave for the real world and do some work. This panic attack is exhausting though...don't know if I can put in a full shift.

You obviously know a lot more about radiation than I do. I guess I should just stay quiet and leave it to the experts.

I did not intend to offend - I know little to nothing on the subject which is why I am scared of it all. I posted the above to lighten the situation - again, not to offend. My apoligies.

No, the only verified deaths were 31 workers killed in the immediate aftermath. Everything else was "projections" that haven't materialized. Studies have shown though, that mental health issues arising from the fear mongering and "hopelessness" of being victims have lead to suicides and other behaviors. Seriously, the coverage of "you're going to die from cancer and your kids will be mutants" was way more dangerous than the radiation turned out to be. Also, faster than they predicted, the chernobyl area is back to normal background radiation. People haven';t returned but animals and plants have.

Seriously, I didn't realize the deaths were so low until I went to find out. It's amazing. They can't measure the impact because it's so small it's in the noise of natural deaths. I don't know how to explain it. Chernobyl wasn't a good thing but it's far less the disaster than has been portrayed.

I miscalculated, becuse I used the incorrect number. The counts per minute in my are are in excess of 1200. Although that does work out to about 20 counts per second, which might actually be what the other website was wanting to say.
