The best decision I could ever make..

i just got home from visiting my grandmother she is in a nursing home an hour and half away from me , my aunt who is not medical savy is her POA so she relies on my opion alot with my grandmothers care I am pretty much a back up POA although we have never put it in writing..so today I get there and her condiction has deteoriated even more..So i spoke with the charge nurse regarding hospice..at this point i feel this is the best thing and only thing left I could do for her, it's hard to look at it at a medical stand point verses an emotional stand point, my grandmother raised me she was pretty much " my mom" growing.. I stayed with her while my dad worked..this is really tough but I know without a doubt it truly is the best option, hopefully there will be an available bed at the facility that is less then five minutes from my house....
I * think* I'm ok with the part of her passing b/c she truly has no quality of life I just hate the idea of her being all alone, as a nurse I have always believed NOONE should ever die alone, none of my patients do even if I have to sit with them off the clock I feel strongly about this... just pray for my family it is going to be tough the next few weeks..... ANND my son has to go to a doctors appt this afternoon at 330pm for excessive eye blinking, he has been complaining of headaches on occaison also......thanks in advance!

A friend of mine had to put her grandmother in a similar facility. She (grandma) is legally blind, is obviously frail due to her age and lived in a house with stairs. She'd previously broken her leg (last year) and it was horrible for her to try and get around. Add her Alzheimer's to the mix and the facility really became the best option.

In this day and age where a 2 income home is almost mandatory, it really puts the families in a difficult situation financially and emotionally.

and so it begins my dad just called me and told me they are meeting with the case worker in the am to consult Hospice , they have started her on a iv she is still unresponsive and her breathing is still shallow :( I'm about to get dressed and go there...tomorrow I have a field trip with my son and then i work the next three days so I'm going there tonight. please pray for her comfort. thanks in advance!

Of course I'll state the obvious and say its one of the most difficult times in your life and nothing we can say will comfort you in this time of pending grief. I've had quite a few of my relatives in this same situation in the past few years, the price of being 50+ I guess, it does play havoc with your mind and in turn, your health.

I've had quite a few of my relatives in this same situation in the past few years, the price of being 50+ I guess, it does play havoc with your mind and in turn, your health.

Thanks Kazz i appreciate that...it's a one day at a time kind of thing...i'm glad i went tonight to see her.. i feel confident knowing it was the right decision...now just waiting for the call.

my granny got moved to a Hospice facility this afternoon, not expected to last throught the week but Thank God she is comfortable, She was going to have to get a chest tube, feeding tube and dialysis to even attempt to stabilize her, Her birthday is friday too :( Please pray it's peaceful and not drawn out...
