Tips/advice needed re Times Sqaure NYE trip

G'day one and all. With my daughter travelling to Canada for 12 months shortly and our youngest son most likely doing a semester @ Louisiana State University, the boss & I thought we'd catch up with them @ Christmas / New Year in the US.

We've pencilled in the east coast as we're also going to Ireland and Times Square for New Year's Eve seems to be on the cards. It is listed as one of the top 10 places to celebrate the new year.

Just wondering, who out there has ventured out into the cold to celebrate New Year in New York? Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated . . . also any tips on places to see and just as important, to avoid in NYC.

If you're going to watch the ball drop on New Years eve in NYC you should be there the day before and camp for the night. Some people get there a couple days early.

We visited NYC for the 2nd time last December. I can PM you with some of the things we learnt and places we visited if you like? We stayed 4 nights (and an extra 2 nights in Long Island courtessy of British Airways as Heathrow was snowed in!) and managed to pack quite a bit in.

If you want to see Ground Zero in a way many do not see, PM Basher on here.....he will hook you up!

If you are planning on being here News Year Eve...BOOK NOW!!!!!! Marriott Times Square will give you one hellof a view without being in the cold. At that time of year, you need to head over to Rockefeller Center and see the tree and ice skating rink. You might as well see the Rocketts and the Christmas show. And off course, a trip to Macys where the Miracle on 34th all began and a family picture with Santa.

Statue of Liberty....Empire State Building.....Museum of Natural History.....Central Park....

How many days/nights? How many folks?
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.

Ta for the tips . . . . . we haven't set a real time frame besides seeing the niece (15) in Nice, Christmas Day in Belfast and NYE in New York. Start/end dates really depend on where/what etc . . Not sure if the daughter will be with us NYE. Not sure if the son will be either.

Not sure if the 23 & 20 yr old will want a family pic with Santa. . . I know the wife will just give me a strange look, but I'm pretty used to that. =D

well we was only there for a day from 8am-11pm so what we got to see was limited :( If you plan on walking block to block we took the red tour buses, LEARN the stops and times before hand we did ALOT of walking. I swear I felt like I walked from one end of New York to the other. Rockafellefellar plaza, Ground zero,Statue of liberty, and central park was my favorites, central park actually has a zoo inside of it. lots of places to shop....the wife will love it! I will try to find some of my pictures of the statue

this is the police memorial wall @ Ground Zero all the officers that died assisting when the terrorists attacks began....when I stood here taking this picture I just cried.... the never-ending names is unbelievable.....it was a VERY humbling experience, this is located near the gates of Ground Zeros reconstruction. as well as the memorial museum.

In all her glory... I took this picture standing at her feet

I would not discourage someone from going to this BUT I will never insert myself in that mess

I was at Wash DC for the 4th of July once and that was PLENTY.

Hahahaha . . . I know the feeling, I don't do NYE here in Melbourne central business district for the same reason, 600,000,000 people elbow to elbow!!! It's bad enough I've had to work a few, but once in a life time, a bit of a bucket list item really. . . a bit like having a white Christmas.
