In reading the bible, it is routinely written that "the end is near". It gives no time, just that it is near. In The Purpose Driven Life, the author talks about how our life on earth is nothing but a milisecond to God. So what we perceive as 100 years on earth may be only a couple of seconds to Him. Therefore, in his opinion of when the bible says the end is near. Maybe not near in terms of our human life, but in His terms.
Like anything, it is open to interpertation.
