Online and Small Business Ideas

I know a lot of you are retired from law enforcement and have ether kicked off the boots for good or moved into a second career. Do any of you have experience with starting a online business? I have a couple ideas that I have been rolling around but have not had the guts rather put up the money to really try it.

I have often thought of doing an ebay type of thing, or maybe a craigs list. naw that would never work.

I have bought and sold on eBay. It’s not hard but people are looking for the cheapest price. You need to do your research in which wholesaler you pick. A lot of the big sellers will undercut your price to keep you out of the market.

I've owned a website before for a full month. (Big accomplishment for me). Yes, it may have failed but it had a pretty smart idea behind it. What I did was I become an affiliate for Amazon.com and I sold products from Amazon on my website and I got part of the money. Also I signed up for something called Google Adsense where they place ads on the website and if people click on them, you get paid a few cents. So yea, I guess making websites is a small hobby for me. Good luck if thats what you want to do, but just to let you know it's really hard to get your website noticed, and thats why mine failed.

Total Money made: Somewhere around $8 dollars.

But I suggest you don't do it, for 2 reasons:

1. No one really views your website, as it is hard to get views.
2. If there are people that view your website, they don't buy anything.

Of course though, you can do whatever you want since I can't force you to listen to my opinions.

I wouldn't do it again if I had the chance, right now I'm trying to learn some web designing in my free time.

The latest statistics from the Small Business Administration show that two-thirds of new employer establishments survive at lease two years, and 44 percent survive at least four years. The failure isn't as high as lore would lead you to believe, but it's still pretty high. And if you've invested a lot of money in it, that can really hurt.

I frankly don't have the guts for it. My son in law is self employed and makes a good living at it, but he and my daughter work a lot harder than I ever did and the risk is always looming over their heads. They're bright enough that when they have a good year, they put money away for the bad ones, but a lot people don't do that.

The key is to come up with something that won't have a lot of competition. The problem with the internet is even if you were lucky enough to find that rare thing that didn't have competition, someone would eventually morph into your competitor. I'm talking about individuals who want to make a living off this endeavor. But for making a little on the side, it can probably be useful. But you will still always have competition breathing down your neck, much worse than brick and mortar small businesses do. Unless you're a big business, or tied to a franchise business, or porn like Samwell says, I think it's the toughest place to make money.

If you wanna make money in general, start with finding a need that has to be filled. Look around and say, "what thing or service are people always complaining they don't have?" That's why our service sector grows and grows -because people are always coming up with yet another idea to fill somebody's "b**ching." Keep an ear to the ground for what people are "b**ching" about the most. Successful businesspeople are really good listeners.
