    Wild Boar Hunting

I just got back from a hunting trip. I went hunting in Texas for wild boar. A first for me. Had an absolute blast.

I'm still pulling slickers thorns and splinters out of myself but it was worth it.

I'm really glad I went. I must have thanked my wife 20 times.

Getting ready to head to the meat processor and get it packaged up.

Is the wild boar meat any good? Just wondering, I would think it would be fairly tuff? Anyway I'm glad you had fun, I love to hunt but I usually end up donating the meat to charity.

I'm kind of in the dumps right now, I lost my hunting land in MO last year and deer season is going on now. Got to figure something out, 2 years and only being able to shoot injured deer along side the road doesn't fill the void.
Excuse me Officer, I have a stupid Question. "No problem, I've got a stupid answer for you!"

Shooting a sow is preferred for good tasting meat. Small bores under 200 lbs is ok. Big bore hogs are not recommended to eat. I have heard where people have shot big bores and had them processed. When they put the meat on their grill, it stunk so bad it ruined the grill (could never get the smell out of the grill).

I got called out to work a crash Sunday morning. A wild hog was hit by a 2006 Mustang. The hog was less than 150 lbs and left the Mustang unable to be driven. They are so low to the ground they do alot of undercarriage damage.

Mountain Man, glad you had a good time. Be Safe.

I took a small sow about 80 lbs, and 2 small boars. One around 90 and the other around 110 lbs.

I am brining a tenderloin right now and will fillet it and pan fry it tonight. I had the butcher keep a few small hams and some shoulders I'll smoke those sometime later at home. The rest will be made into breakfast sausage and italian sausage. I may change a few things around when they call to tell me how much meat there really is once it is boned out.

I probably have around 15-20 lbs of back strap and I'll marinade the rest and throw it in the freezer.

    Hopefully it will taste good.

I really thought the pigs would be harder to kill than they were. They are like little tanks.

I'm told the little ones like I got taste pretty good. First time so I will let you know how it turns out.

Those are just about the right size IMHO. Should be some really good eating. To me wild boar is surprisingly good eating.

Where in Texas did you hunt?

I hunted near Petrolia which I think is in Clay county. I used a 270 for 2 of them and a 45/70 for one of them. I have never seen an animal planted like the one I got with the 45/70.

    ISPbear,

The meat is very good. I cooked up some chops from the back strap. Good stuff. The wife likes it so its a win, win situation. I don't think she will mind me going back to hunt a few more when this runs out.

She's already hitting me up for some BBQ.

I can't say how it is now but I used to pull some pretty nice bucks off of the public lands at the Martha Perry wildlife Reserve down there in MO. No bad hunting. Of course there was less pressure the further back you were willing to walk.

I use 405gr flat points out of my 45-70, it's mean round and should stop anything in North America.

Thats what I was using 405 grain remington core-lokt. I can tell you that if you hit a boar in the earhole at around 10 feet it will drop it straight on its side....................really fast.
