Are you afraid of Friday the 13th. ?

Friday the 13th phobia? You have plenty of company | ajc.com

Being afraid of Friday the 13th. is nonsense, as my wife and I were married on a Friday the 13th. over 50 years ago and the longer we stay married the closer we're drawn closer to one another.

My mother and especially my maternal grandmother were highly superstitious about everything.

I'm not superstitious nor do I believe in luck.

My mother who died on 10/12/07 at 103 YOA was also very superstitious and especially afraid of the number 13. She almost had a fit when my wife and I were married on the 13th., much less Friday the 13th. She said it could never last. To her, breaking a mirror meant 7 years of bad luck, a bird flying into the house meant death to someone close. Black cats, walking under ladders, the hoot of an owl at certain times, spilling salt and all that malarkey was strictly bad luck to her.

With the schedule I work, I'm lucky to know what day it is let alone the date. With that said, Friday the 13th is just another day to me.

I think being Southern may have some to do with it. My grandmother was born and raised in Mississippi and moved to Texas just before she married my grandfather. She had more superstitions than I can count. She wouldn't even iron the tails of my grandfather's shirts because it was bad luck. Never heard of that anywhere else, but she believed it.

My Mom, who died in 1998 at 92 wasn't as bad, but she would stop the car and turn around if a black cat crossed in front of her. I also remember it was bad luck to walk with one shoe on and one off, so many years of bad luck for every step, all sort of things.

Apparently the 13th is Hell on Cop Forums.

Nah, I don't think being southern has anything to do with it. My I-L's are much more superstitous than my family ever was. They are of Swiss/Italian ancestry from NYC. Mine hailed from Swiss/German via Pennsylvania and I'm third Gen PA. Dutch... which I just recently discovered.

Around here, some black people seem to be much more superstitous than any of the whites I have ever known.

Maybe it has more to do with either education or common sense? My I-L's are always cutting off their nose to spite their face.

You could be well right, being Southern may not have much to do with it. I was just guessing that perhaps some of the voodoo superstitions from the black people in the South rubbed off on the white people. My white family was about the same economic level of most back then.

But I don't really know. Education probably has more to do with it. My generation was the first in my family to graduate from high school. I'm the only one in it to go to college, much less graduate.

Not afraid at all. Turned out to be a good day for me. Caught two burglars that morning. Just another day down here. Be Safe.

I graduated Boot Camp and became a Marine on a Friday the 13th, so I don't fear the day.

Soooo... what would happen if a black cat knocked a stack of 13 mirrors off of a ladder with a salt shaker, which resulted in killing an owl that had flown into the house?

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, of course.

Now, had you said this occurred on Friday the 13th, it would surely mean the end of the world!!!!!

Southern had nothing to do with it, as she was born and raised in a small fishing village in Maine. Her mother, brothers, sisters and most everyone in that area were the same way from what she told me. Her Dad, the skipper of a sailing vessel was the only one on the maternal side of my family who wasn't.
Mom, would walk 10 miles out of her way to avoid walking through a cemetery.
