Writing your memoirs.

Have you ever thought of writing your memoirs, a personal story of all the interesting and some not so interesting things and events that have happened in your life? You don't need to have had a hardscrabble youth in order to write a memoir. You don't need eccentric parents. Believe it or not, you don't need anything dramatic. And, you certainly don't have to publish it.
We've got some good writers who would make excellent authors here in RP. And as LEO's have some interesting things to tell of the cases, situations, arrests, chases, good people and bad people they've been involved with during their long or short carreer in the profession.

Most of the interesting stuff, I lived through twice. Once in real life and the second time on a therapist's couch. Don't care to do it again.....

Besides, my wife wrote a book about the loss of her son and dealing with the grief. I saw all the hassle she went through and not interested. I'd rather just share the funny stuff on RP.:D

I've never thought about writing my memoirs but I have thought about writing down every joke I hear for a year and then trying to publish a joke book ;)

I know it's pretty lame but everyone likes jokes ;)

Hell, I'm still trying to write down my memories of a 4 week driving trip I took when I was 18, from Lancaster, PA to Montivideo, Uruguay, for an old family friend of my Dad's who I went with.

Shortly after we got back, he took a fast-pitched softball to the head and he has no independant memory of the trip.

Now he's in his 70's and he recently asked my Dad if he could get me to write things down. I've got about half of it on the hard drive, but can't seem to find the patience to do the rest.

My wife works with a guy who "wrote a book".

The guy is an idiot and his book is gibberish, full of typos and misspellings, disjointed and run-on sentences.

He self-published it.

He can't give them away... but he can claim that he's a "Published Author"... and he does. :rolleyes:

Naw, the only time money is important to me is when I don't have any....

I'd rather relive it with friends. In fact, yesterday I was in Costco with my wife and I heard my name called. I turned around and it was a detective I worked with in dope.

We were never close friends, but I liked him because he was always smiling and having a good time no matter what we were doing. He and I started laughing and joking to the point we embarrassed our wives because you could hear us all over the store.

At least once a week, I have lunch with one of the guys I used to work with. I've stayed very good friends with several. Sometimes we start laughing so hard at some of the fun (and dumb) stuff we used to do that tears come to our eyes. That's the way I like to relive my life.....

If I get into the serious stuff that would really be interesting to the public, I get depressed. Too many dead babies, Bill.

Often I find myself in conversation with new acquaintances and the conversation will almost always come to my background and "you should write a book". Although I think it may be interesting to some that have led a boring life I do not think I ever will. I have, at times, brought pen to paper and quickly realized that some demons should stay where they are, in the past. To many really bad memories, loss of close friends, horrible places. The day to day memories have been clouded in humorous moments - reality can be something that keeps one awake at nights. I choose to live in the now with fond memories of good times and allow time to recreate the sh!t that if dwelt upon would cause insomnia. If there is a message to pass then I guess it would be to not only learn from your own mistakes but attempt to learn from others and not repeat negative actions. Life only comes around once - be decisive, capitalize upon opportunity, and prepare your children with the tools necessary to flourish.

My sister is constantly trying to talk me into writing an autobiography. I even thought about it a couple times but I have a bad habit of starting to write stuff then, after I'm 70-90% of the way done, I look at it and go, "This is crap!" then delete the whole thing. So even if I did give it a go, it'd probably be trashed before I was finished anyway.

Yeah, ocasionally.........I was born with a bad back and had to wear braces. Mom and I lived alone and when she got the results of my IQ test, she was "nice" to the Principal and he made an exception and let me in regular school. Bullies used to pick on me all the time and one day as I was running from them my braces came apart and I didn't need them anymore.

I went into the Army and survived Viet Nam, saving several of my buddies while getting shot in the butt. President Nixon presented me with a medal for winning a Ping Pong tournament in China and furthering diplomatic relations.

I could go on, but the rest is just a boring:cool:

Hell, if I ever wrote my memoirs, I'd have to hire an attorney and make sure they were sealed until two generations passed by before they were opened. Unless, of course, I left some stuff out. ;)
