Norm's fired jeans wearing police chief running for seat on city council..

Fired jeans-wearing chief running for Jonesboro council seat| ajc.com

Hmm, there's a mouthful for the title of a thread:D...Brad Johnson the former police chief of Norm's home town of Jonesboro is planning on running for a seat on the city council. Johnson was fired recently by the mayor of Jonesboro for wearing blue jeans instead of a uniform.
Norm may not agree, but personally I believe the mayor made the right decision.
Any man or woman who is hired to the top post of a city PD represents that department to all who live in and travel through that city and should not be dressed in jeans as it's demeaning not only to the department but the city as well. Every city has it's share of men and women dressed in jeans without the top hauncho of a PD wearing them while on duty.

Why are you in serious trouble? It's OK to wear blue jeans to work just as long as you take them off and put on a uniform when you go on duty.

I was just watching something not too long ago about a few Police Depts in Oklahoma. All the Deputies wore black jeans with their tan uniform shirts.

They let our gang unit wear jeans with uniform shirts. They looked stupid, IMO. If we were a rural dept, it would be different, but these guys weren't getting down and dirty any more than the guys working precincts or traffic.

I got stopped in Cochise county, Arizona once by a deputy wearing Levi's and a regular short sleeve sport shirt with a badge pinned on the pocket..... As I recall, he didn't have on a regular gun belt, just a hawg's leg of some sort in a holster on his belt.....

However, if the man is working for the city and they tell him not to wear jeans, it would be a good idea to do what he's told. It's not so much as whether or not jeans are acceptable to wear by police, but adhering to your employer's dress code.

Something is missing from this story. Was he in fact informed by the Mayor or Council not to wear jeans to work. Did he violate some guide line from the City Gov't. I need more information to give an opinion. In Atlantic City when a bad snow storm would blow in the troop's could all wear jean's and anything else that they would be comfy in.

Absolutely. If he was told not to wear them and he defied them and did anyway, then I have no sympathy. But if he showed up with them on for a specific reason and they just arbitrarily canned him, that sucks.

When I worked homicide, we were expected to wear a coat and tie. But if you get called out to a grizzly homicide scene, no one cares if you were jeans, boots, etc. But you had to have a reason to dress down.

I wore shirt and tie when I was in homicide, but it was too damn hot to wear a sports jacket except for maybe 10 days a year and always at court.

We never wore shirt and tie on call-outs, and it was an official policy to have a dress down day Friday. Even the Sheriff wore jeans on Friday unless he had some PR event.

I usually wore a nice polo shirt when in jeans. As a matter of fact, out here, a pressed open collar long sleeve shirt with pressed jeans and shined western boots can be downright sexy. ;) Those from Texas, New Mexico, etc., know exactly what I am talking about.

We used to be allowed to wear short sleeve, square tailed shirts with the tails out of the pants and covering the gun on hot days.

The dress code in detectives had gone to hell in this old man's opinion now. No one wears a tie anymore. I've seen street people dress better than some of the people I saw the last time I went to the office.

I still have my cowboy boots but haven't worn them in years. Actually, I preferred my old Army black leather combat boots (yes, children, they used to be black leather) at scenes. The thick rubber soles had the best traction of any boots or shoes I've ever worn. They're over 40 years old, but still in great shape. I wear them now when we have ice.... For you guys in Arizona, that's frozen water that's really slick to walk on.:D
