Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

Been doin good - staying busy.
Just so there's no mis-understandings:
I finished the reserve academy last May - three months long - certified instructors - fully sworn with the department - but not state certified.
Not sure if that qualifies me for being verified. I do about eighty to ninety hours a month on patrol, plus other details as needed. A few of us have requested getting state certified on our own dime (just need sponsorship), but so far they (Sheriff & a few others) have not decided one way or another.
Perhaps one day I'll convince my spouse to let me go full time - but right now I couldnt afford the pay cut.
Lovin it, though.
...You're you and I'm me and we're just us...
I'd imagine if you aren't state certified you would then in turn not have arrest powers which I believe is required for verification. I could be wrong though.
Either way welcome back.

We are paired up on patrol - well, except for this morning where I had a unit by myself. (school zones - and other special details)
My partner is certified - I pretty much do everything but sign the ticket / paperwork / etc. - except in instances where my witness statement is needed for the case. We ride as a dual unit. Saves manpower and is a good force multiplier for a county like ours where more manpower is needed.

Kinda sounds like an Arizona "Posse" member.

Civilians with some training who strap on guns and try to help out the Deputies.

Well hell yeah! They even give us bullets for our guns! (spit followed by a "dinging" sound)
...Except we all look the same. Same uniform, same equipment, etc.
We went through training that some of the full timers didnt get as well - bottom line we ARE there to help - and additionally some of us are also there to get our foot in the door for a sponsorship. (hopefully I can make that work)

Never saw an old western wherein the sheriff formed a posse of citizens to help go after the bad guys?
Same thing here, authorized in the Arizona Constitution and Revised Statutes, the sheriff can still swear in a posse. They wear a uniform and are armed, but only have LE authority while with a sworn Deputy Sheriff who is authorized to act as though the Sheriff was there in person.

jsmith75 - I just want you to know I'm not knocking you for what you do. I was just trying to clarify what it IS that you do. ;)
Best of luck getting on fulltime. I know it's a rough time for people right now. Just remember for your own sake (just for right now) that it's the other guy in the car who's the cop. :D A lot of younger guys could have issues not knowing where to draw the line.

Sir,
I didnt take it that way; however, please hesitate before painting our program with such a wide brush. We lay it out there just like the rest of them. When my partner and I enter a house on a dv call there is no cop / not a cop mentality - we truly watch out for each other. Sometimes he handles and sometimes, believe it or not, I handle it. Same with traffic stops, building clearing, etc. - we get right in there with them. But I see your point, and I also see some in the program that go off the deep end and get themselves in trouble - those are the ones the full timers end up shunning.
Thanks for the kind words of luck - I do want to go full time. I cant articulate why, but it's just something I've wanted / felt like I needed to do since I was a kid. This is a great way to work with the department - and sir, I mean it when I say WORK WITH THE DEPARTMENT. I'm blessed with a good partner who is a great teacher and friend - and please note that I try hard to make sure that I not only stay in the bounds of "what I am," but I also try to make sure there are no "misconceptions" of what I am - hence my earlier remark of making sure there are not misunderstandings.
My fingers are tired and I need beer...Peace.
