    What do you brake for?

Going to Sam's club to get cat food and other things, a turtle was crossing a 2 lane road. (median in the middle then two more on the other side). Turned around- went back and my friend got out and grabed him for me.

Pretty big as far as turtles go. Gave some water, and took to a lake (pond) down the road that caters to these animals.

He swam away quickly, but I think He was smiling.

    What do you brake for?

Critters about everything. Especially if I'm in my squad. I stopped to help a baby bird across the road at the start of shift last Saturday. I'm a sucker for animals.
The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.............

I hear ya about being in the radio car....if I hit a roach in the black-n-white I'd have PETA calling me every name in the book on live TV. That's my luck, right there. But I'm also a sucker for animals. People bring me stray animals, baby raccoons, owls, all sorts of wildlife all the time at the station (I mean seriously, WTF am I gonna do with an OWL for chrissakes???). I will NOT bring home another stray, but I REALLY feel guilty every time I call animal control. I finally found a no-kill shelter that will come and get the critters....I feel a LOT better now.

Any type of animal. My folks often told me I was going to get killed trying to save an animal rather than at work.

And I can't run over roadkill...when I drove the 40 ft bus for inmate transportation...they told specifically told me that I would have to hit any animal that crosses the path...instead of swerving.

My reply, "Hell I'm Asian...we don't get into accidents we cause them!!!!"
This profession is not for people looking for positive reinforcement from the public. Very often it can be a thankless job and you can't desire accolades, because those are not usually forthcoming. Just do your job to the best of your ability and live with the decisions you've made.

Any animal, as long as I am not going to cause an accident. I've been known to stop and get turtles off the road at work. Much to some motorists laughter. :D

I would much rather help animals then most humans I deal with.

I am a sucker for animals. I have 2 cats (all at least 15 LBS and all stray toms) and one dog. no more for a while.

I would brake for people, BUT........We had a Sgt who lost his kids (entire family) when the wife swerved to avoid a dog in the road, back in the 80's. It happened on L.I. Very sad, the kids were killed and the wife survived. I couldn't imagine what they went through. They seperated afterward. When braking didn't stop her in time she swerved and was hit head on by a large truck.

    :( Sad deal.

That brings up a good point. Braking is good but swerving is bad.
