"They don't give a damn about any trumpet blowing band........it ain't what they call rock and roll................"
Elk archery. I scouted up until 5 days before the season started. My usual place. The palce was thick with elk and usually is. The season starts and not an elk to be found which is weird for this place. Bear **** everywhere. Mule deer everywhere but not an elk in sight. I used to rarely see another hunter ion the field. SOB's were friggin everywhere. I was laughing at two of the worst buglers i have every heard trying to call each other in. One of them walked right past me and never realized I was there.
When I say no elk I mean no sign what so ever no tracks no frash scat nothing. It was weird. I'm guessing aliens.

Night folks...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I have the rest of this month to hunt as well. It was just weird that the elk vanished, I have hunted this place for over 15 years. I spend alot of time in the backcountry there and have never seen anything like it before. Usually you can go for a hike and return and Elk have stepped in your prints several times.
Alot of bear sign. Usually alot of bears anyway but it was rediculous this year.

I only hunt archery. Muzzleloading season is in around 2 weeks and is a week long. Archery ends around the 26th.
Its a great area. Been a very wet year. The area I hunt is a long valley with a small creek which runs from beaver pond to beaver pond. It has plenty of grass, natural mineral licks and dark timber on the north slope of the valley. Its perfect habitat and the Elk usually stay year round. Thats why I'm a little vexed with the lack of any sign. The Elk population density is usually pretty high.
As far as the bears go the population has to be high. There is a ton of berries this year I'm not even seeing logs or ant hills torn up. But you can't walk 50 yard without a big ole pile of bear scat. Mountain lion population is pretty dense but I didn't see any this time around.
Mule deer are thicker than usual and not a bit spooked. I walked up within 20 yards of several and they weren't overly concerned about me. They weren't so keen on something else in the valley but I never saw what it was. May have been a lion and thats why they weren't running from me. Safer to stick with me than a hungry cat.
The rut won't hit hard until last of the month begining of October here. I have only heard a few real bugles this year and they were young bulls practicing.

Nope constant ATV use in the area. But the area I hunt is protected from most. The bear scat is full of berries and very little hair. I didn't pay alot of attention to the beavers but i'm guessing they have nothing to do with the disappearance of the elk. No snow yet. I'm guessing it will be a while before the snow hits.
Its the damnest thing. I never have seen elk clear out of a good area like that before.
