Back on topic. Why is it that people who don't live here always talk about us falling into the ocean? Every other state I have been in, it is always the same.

I have lived through dozens of quakes. Only one ever actually got my attention enough to realize it was a quake at the time. They aren't really that big of a deal. I just don't get it I guess.

I grew up in SoCal. Lived there until I was 17. Spent most of my Marine Corps enlistment there, as well. EVERYBODY talks about that, not just people who don't live in Cali.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

    "Wrong door, buddy!"

Let no man's ghost say my training failed him.

I was never in and earthquake until about 15 years ago when we had one. It happened about 5 in the morning and did some minimal damage to our house. We had another about 7 or 8 years ago. There's just enough of them that I buy earthquake insurance for my house. I don't want to end up owing money on an empty lot someday.

Experts do say that there is a good possibility a big one could occur especially in S. Cal.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

Well its not a small wonder that Cali is tectonically unstable.

You have the Juan de Fuca subduction zone off the shore...and the San Andreas fault.

I think Cali isn't going to float away....rather its going to get cut off the US and sucked to the bottom of the sea.

A 5.0 isn't a huge quake. I'd call it a "decent" shaker if you're close enough to the epicenter. I hope all out SoCal peeps are okay.
I couldn't tell if it was my syrround or the tectonic plates moving underneath during the shake
I also had the A/C on and the fan was almost blowing the pictures off the wall.

No state is immune from having earthquakes, including my homestate of Georgia.

    http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/...region=Georgia

The strongest quake to hit the east coast was the Charleston quake of 8/31/1886 which was felt as far away as Boston to the North, Chicago and Milwaukee to the Northwest, as far West as New Orleans, as far South as Cuba, and as far East as Bermuda.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charleston_earthquake

The mother of all quakes east of the Rockies was the New Madrid quake of 12/16/1811 when it caused the Mississippi river to run backwards and rang church bells in Boston 1000 miles away.

We had a 3.0 in my town. It was enough to be felt but it was at 4 am and I didn't feel a thing. It's pretty rare for us to have a tremor big enough to be felt.

Tell that to the people who have lost loved ones as a result of earthquakes...

You say you're from No Cal - maybe you were too young to remember this one:

I was in West LA, playing cards with my roommate when this one happened:

I've been through hurricanes and tornadoes, but earthquakes scare me the most. With the first two, I could hunker down somewhere and weather them out, with an earthquake there's nowhere to go.

The last one we had was only about a 4 point something and seemed to last for around 90 seconds, although I suspect it was a lot shorter. A friend of mine was overlooking a pasture when it happened and he said the land was literally rolling like the ocean....

We have small ones up here all the time that you can't feel, 3 or less. There's a fault that runs right through Portland where people have houses all along the sides of hills. When that one goes, a lot of rich people will be homeless.

I was in Greece around 1991 and there was a 8.9 on the Richter scale if I remember correctly, the building swayed left and right for about a minute and a half, then stopped for half hour, aftershocks were the worst because the building across the street collapsed on the second wave killing everybody in it and whoever was out on the sidewalks and street.

Panic everywhere and everyone was rushing for the elevators instead of taking the stairs down.
I was still in the room under an antique dining room table and I thought this was the end of me but I guess it wasn't.

After it was all over the dust that came out as a result from the collapse was about an inch thick everywhere within 200 yards radius.

I've been in the eye of a category 7 hurricane, felt 2-3 minor tremors and seen twisters, but have never been in one. I would rather experience all 3 than to be caught in a 5 plus magnitude quake.

Hurricanes go up to Category 5. But man o man when they hit it feels like a Cat 12 sometimes. :D
