The problem is gd, that being a cop is not the only thing you do. You buy things, sign contracts, can be involved in lawsuits (I speak of "you" in a general sense, not you specifically), require process service not associated with you employment, hide assets from people who have a legtimite access to those assets, etc.
My father worked for the Dallas County Sheriffs Office for several years. His deputization was filed with the District Clerks office and could be located when looking in the Grantor/Grantee records!
I agree that it creates a potential danger for officers, but there are steps an officer can take to minimize that risk.
