Armed security officers. No police authority whatsoever. Off duty carry no different than any other citizen. I was one for 1.5 years.

I don't imagine they are considered police officers anywhere. The only non government employed police officers in Oregon are railroad police and Humane Society investigators. Here, the primary definition of a police officer is someone who can serve a search or arrest warrant. No security guards can do that.

They're Commissioned Security Officers in Texas (Commissioned=armed, non-Commissioned=unarmed). I was certified once, but never actually worked as one.

They basically have the same powers as the owner of the property. They can ward off trespassers, stop thefts, such as detaining shoplifters and holding them for police (as in Loss Prevention). They can also arrest people on felonies in view or crime against the peace in view, which any other citizen can do.

And of course they can use their weapons if necessary to defend lives and property if they follow the law. But again, ANY citizen can do all that, they just can't do it for hire without the license.

About the only thing the Comisioned Security Officers can do that an ordinary citizen can't do is carry a handgun openly. On the other hand, an ordinary citizen with a CHL can carry a concealed handgun, but a security officer can't conceal theirs - go figure.
