It goes without saying, I have been absent from the forum lately. Darn family is so demanding during the holidays...what's that all about????? ;)
I know somewhat about what has been going on here, I think I'm pretty much caught up now. It would've been awhile longer for my return, but the record amount of complaints that slammed into my inbox......WOWZER!!! Anyway, I just wanted to touch base with all of you on a couple of things. My thoughts will be random and unprecise...that's the best I can do for being up so early and in the absence of coffee.

In regards to people not being LE here. Two words....SO WHAT! Yes, it IS a law enforcement forum, but it is not a prerequisite to being a member here. So, can we cut it out with the "your not a cop" drama. I'll be the first to say I AM NOT A COP!!! It doesn't make me less of a person than anyone else here, but I can probably kick the crap out of you in a pie-eating contest. Well, perhaps Norm can eat more pie than me....hmmmm.

In regards to special treatment of older members (IMPO). DUH!!! I'm not saying that it's favoritism per say. But if "BenHere2Daze" starts an argument and says that Bustytatas, Switchback, TX, Yahcandishwasher, are sending inflammatory PMs and all four of them came to me and said that they, in fact, did not send PMs......I would be more inclined to believe the longer standing members. If "BenHere2Daze" starts his first post as a political tirade or cop-critical topic without introducing himself to the forum or getting to know the members/atmosphere here, don't be surprised if the moderators/members/owner side with the veterans of the site. I personally don't know what happened to KJ, but I'm assuming that Jason banned him. With that said, he cleary made a decision based on the number of complaints or the person's history here. I trust his judgement and it is his site, I respect that first and foremost. Furthermore, if you choose to invite someone to the site and you have already given them a run-down of the personalities here, that doesn't give them the right to jump in as though they know the members already......they have to put in the time to get to know the members before they get all heavy in topic. You wouldn't walk up to a crowd of people and start dropping your opinion in the discussion without getting to know them first. Also, if you do invite someone to the site and they end up taking some heat from the members, you may have to step outside of your friendship and really assess the situation. Saying things like "s/he's a really nice person" based on a long-standing friendship YOU have with him/her will not win rave reviews since we don't have that same history. We only have what is written on the forum. If they jump on with a huge opinion and we have no build-up on the person to base these opinions on.....well, it probably won't be good. In fact, members will probably think they are just "trolling" and the discussion won't have a chance, specifically because "BenHere2Daze" didn't take the time to feel out the members.

OK...for all the instigators and antagonistic members here (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE), good for you for finding a fun and inexpensive way to entertain yourselves. For all the people that the instigating is directed towards and managed to deflect it.....a big hoot for you too.

As for name-calling and insulting.....when a member breaks one of the rules (ie. namecalling, mild flaming), please just report it and have some patience while the moderators/owner get back to the situation, rather than creating more of a problem by adding your own namecalling and flaming two cents. It speaks volumes when one person breaks the rules and several report it and leave it be, it isolates the culprit. However, if there are numerous complaints on a member and a moderator/owner goes to the forum...only to find out that several of the members are in a tit-for-tat, it's difficult then to single out one person.

There has been some mulling around of the idea of a probationary period and COPS-ONLY forum? Too much time and effort in regards to the probationary period. I think we can all just try to deal with the so-called trolls and bashers for a bit until the owner/moderators can get here. I'm sure that most of you are used to in it in daily living, this place is no different. If you get really worked up over someone on the forum, use your ignore button or get away from the computer and take a walk. As for the COPS-ONLY area that has been requested, some of the older members can remember when there was actually an area like this......it didn't get used as much as the open forum so I believe it was dropped. If you wish to speak to another cop privately, use the chatroom. You can drop a PM to other cops and set up a meeting there ...etc. I think you'll agree that the best discussions are in the open forum on the board.

No, it doesn't make anyone less of a person, IG. I know there are a few people who seem to discount what others say because they aren't in LE, but the majority are good folks. It is not to get the title to lord over others, but to help the people who ask questions know who is LE or not. For me, the main reason is for the fakers on here - the people who say "I am a cop" and are outright lying. Besides, if I choose to PM someone for a cop's opinion, I want to know it is a verified cop.

I find that happening a lot. Who cares if someone is a troll? Then don't answer their posts. Just don't tell me not to answer them either. Some are young kids who aren't as eloquent in their conversation to be clear or concise. Just answer them or don't, or if you want to have a "lively discussion" (AKA fight), then that is YOUR choice. I hate the term troll. I see someone starting a thread, and 6 people immediately call them a troll. Well, that is an insult, and I've seen many times where the thread-starter defends themselves, which opens up the floodgates, and ruins a thread.

Probationary periods would put a lot of strain on the moderators, and I think it would be more trouble than its worth. However, that is just my opinion.. I don't really care if it is done or not. I just think it would be too much work.

Stump, I'm all for the verification titles under names. This post was a couple of days old when you responded. My statement was in reference to the use of the expression, "your not even a cop" to mean that you're opinion doesn't hold as much weight. More importantly, it was in regards to the fact that it gets used during political discussions. This came about after a rash of complaints over some squabblings in a political discussion. In terms of having LE verified and labeled, I think that's a great idea. However, let me just say that regardless of labels and attempted verifications.....I would hope that anyone who received information from this site (or any other) would take the advice with discretion and follow up by actually checking with their local authorities.

The reason I used "IMPO" is so there was no question that this was my opinion and my opinion alone.
