Deputy Stops Speeder, Delivers Baby on Freeway

DALLAS (AP) – This traffic stop was unlike any other Sgt. Bryan Sherman had made as a Dallas County deputy.

Seconds after he pulled over a speeder on a busy interstate overpass today, he was delivering a healthy baby girl.

Sherman says that he was forced to kick it into gear when he approached the car and saw the woman already giving birth. He says he saw it was now or never and he told the young mother to start pushing.

Soon, Kemia Mendoza was born. Paramedics arrived and took over. The baby weighed in at 6 pounds, 13 ounces. And mother and daughter were doing fine at Baylor Medical Center.

For her part, new mother Danielle Dansby says she told the baby’s father to pull over when she saw the deputy behind them. She told Dallas television station WFAA that she thought the deputy could help, although she just thought it would be by escorting them to the hospital.

The deputy said the experience is something he will never forget.

Not as a cop but I've delivered some 35 babies in my rig or in thier location... that's not counting the hundreds I actually got to the hospital on time. Milwaukee seemed to have an unusually amount of pregnant women when I was there...

I've never delivered one but I was on scene just after a delivery. It looked like a murder scene. There was blood everywhere!!!! :eek:

After being in the delivery room when my son was born I can honestly say that I never want to be on the business end of a woman giving birth. I will stand up by her shoulders and give her support, but I ain't going anywhere near that down there!

Just come to Kentucky....seems like it's the state where women are eternally pregnant. :rolleyes: Usually by guys so high they don't even know who they themselves are. :rolleyes: :eek:

I was lucky, my kids were born at the tail end of the era where the new fathers were made to wait in the waiting room and the nurse came out and told you if it was a boy or a girl.... My (then) wife was calling me enough names when she was in labor, who knows what she would have called me during the birth!:eek:

Well, after having delivered so many myself plus watching it happen at the L&D ward in the hospital I can honestly say I don't understand when people say "watching a child being born is the most beautiful thing... " B.S.... those idiots never had to clean up the ambulance afterward or keep your feet off the floor as your running code to the hospital and the fluid is sloshing back and forth across the floor at every turn!!! The way life is created is amazing but the actual birth is horrific and ugly!

When I was in Vice, a former NYPD guy had his desk next to mine. His wife was expecting a baby any day. One night he got a call and I heard him say, "Your water broke?" Then a few seconds later, he asked, "It didn't get on the bed or anything did it?"

I cracked up at Mr. Sensitivity.:D I know his wife, she's from Brooklyn too. I KNOW he paid for that.....

I'm actually the exact opposite in regards to watching the birth. My wife had to actually pull me back up to her shoulders every now and then to hold on to her hand. Watching both of my children born naturally was the most incredible sight I've ever seen.

DISCLAIMER - I should add that I've worked in healthcare over the past 10 years and at times would sneak down to the OR to watch brain surgery on my lunch hour, so I'm kind of twisted that way.
