ELKIN, N.C. -- David Hayes doesn't usually fish with a girl's toy rod and reel, but after making a record catch, he may reconsider.
The North Carolina man now holds a state fishing record after landing a channel catfish that tipped the scales at 21 pounds, 1 ounce.
His granddaughter had asked him to hold her pink Barbie rod and reel while she went to the bathroom. Seconds later, he caught the big one.
Hayes said his granddaughter was worried the big fish would break her rod. It measured 32 inches long -- 2 inches longer than the Barbie pole.

I used to fish channel cats back in my younger days. Would snag some sturgeon from time to time as well. The best I could ever do though was 8-10pounds.

I saw this report and the first thing to come to my mind was that he was a ****ty granddad.
Why not give the credit to his granddaughter who obviously put the line in the water... ? Let her have her 15 minutes.
Granted, maybe she was shy and not up to the publicity, and if that's the case, don't make any press release at all.
