I am the one carried you every day from the time you were conceived until the time you were big enough to stand on your own.
I am the one who was tired all the time. My back hurt each time I got out of bed. I confused coffee for chocolate and vice versa because of the fatigue I felt.
I am the one who felt your movements and I anticipated your arrival with great joy and yet fear. This fear was for you. Would you be all right? Would you make it okay in the world?
I am the one who carried the weight of your well being upon my shoulders, fearing that when you went out to school or out to play you might get hurt.
I am the one who struggled to make sure dinner was on the table so you could eat and not starve. You fussed so much because you didn't like peas or ham. Yet, look how strong you are today!
I am the one who spent hours at your bedside while you recovered from a terrible illness, even forfeiting my job because you needed me.
I am the one who cheered you on when you entered into a game to win. And when you lost and I saw those tears, I only smiled and wiped them away and took you out for an ice cream for trying your best.
I am the one who explained to you drugs may seem cool but they will kill you inside and eventually on the outside. To me, you're cooler than anything else by being just you.
I am the one who held your hand the first time when you reached up to take mine.
I am the one who ran out into the middle of traffic to reach you in time when you strayed too far. Every day I thank God I made it in time. Lord only knows how fast you were, and my eyes were on you the entire time!
I am the one who set rules and boundaries. You said you hated me, even wished I was dead. You wanted complete freedom, but refused to believe there was a price to pay for that freedom.
I am the one who made you go to school, do your homework, clean your room, take on chores to become a more responsible and satisfying adult later on.
I am the one who refused to allow you to hang with people who were into crime, all because I feared you getting hurt and hurting others.
I am the one who kept loving you, despite the fact you claimed you hated me.
I am the one who encouraged you when you said you couldn't do it. I knew you could! All you had to do was believe in yourself.
I am the one who made you see right from wrong. When you threw a fast ball at the next door neighborer's window on accident and broke it, you feared going to them to admit it because they were a police officer. You feared going to jail. But everything turned out okay, and your allowance paid for that window. Now you are more careful when playing ball outside.
I am the one who felt proud you chose to defend your country by serving in the military. And when you were deployed, I cried. I was scared, but I was so proud.
I am the one who will continue to wait for you to return safely from wherever you are with arms waiting to pull you in for an embrace.
I am the one who is...
your mother.
Just making this post reminds me how little we seem to show our mothers appreciation. It seems we only recognize them on one given holiday. But why not do that every day?
I should make one for fathers.
