    Alternate keyboard maps? Dvorak

This is a bit of an odd question and I don't know if anyone here is familiar with alternate keyboard mapping. I have been using the 'Dvorak' keyboard map (instead of standard QWERTY) for a while and have gotten quite comfortable with it. I was typing at about 43 wpm with QWERTY and am now in the 30s with Dvorak. Would I need to switch back to a normal keyboard layout if considering a career in LE? I am assuming that if there is a lot of computer sharing it would be a headache to use anything but the standard keyboard map.

FYI - No hardware or physical changes are made to the keyboard or computer. It is simply a settings change that once made can easily be switched back and forth between the two types.

    Thanks all!

The computers in my Department are locked down like Ft. Knox. One cannot even change the SCREENSAVER without admin privileges.

I would go back to QWERTY. There is no good reason to use anything else, and the only outcome I see is a headache for a lot of people, including you.

Thank you Citicop, I hadn't thought of the permissions side of it. I will/have gone back to QWERTY - slower than I was obviously. That should change soon though.

The real question is why the hell would you use a different keyboard setup which results in you typing slower than the normal qwerty style?

Actually the whole point of it is two-fold.

    1. It causes less stress on your wrists and hands because of less finger "travel" due to the fact the most common keys are are on the home and top rows; hopefully avoiding things like carpal tunnel or other repetitive wrist issues.

    2. Many claim faster typing after just a short amount of time due to the same reasons as mentioned above.

I don't have any hand or wrist problems but I figured I am young and spend enough time on a keyboard each day at my workplace that it warranted a little precaution. I haven't been at it long enough to exceed my old speed however. The switch back shouldn't be difficult.

    Thanks again for the responses!
