Question I am faced with a very hard decision.

Since I have recently graduated high school, I have been going through the applicaton process to go to a nearby community college. Honestly I dont think that college is for me. I did absolutly horrible on the entrance placement exam, and they are telling me to take remedial classes before I can even take the college credit courses. I have been seriously looking into the military for quite some time and I really think it would make me a better person in the long run, especially if I want to go into law enforcement.

However, my mother and father want me to go to school and get my bachelors degree then proceed into law enforcement and I really dont know what they would say if I told them I want to go into the military instead. I know plenty of officers who have gone to the military who the proceeded to go on and be a police officers and I want to get some other opinions on which would be better for me in the long run.

    Help?!?!

Don't sweat the entrance exams. A lot of people have to take prerequisite courses before college. Why not consider the military and let them pay for college while you serve? Nothing wrong with it as long as you faithfully fulfill your duty. It's your choice however and you should think it thru. Good luck and be glad you have the opportunity.

Even if you go into the military GET COLLEGE, because I know it is a requirerment in my state (maybe country wide?) that you must have at LEAST 60 college credits within 5 years from the date of hire.

Oh, and I was told to take the lower level class for math in my exam. When I got into the class, the teacher said "What the hell did they send you here for, you have aced every pre-test I have handed this class. Needless to say I dropped that class and picked up a more advanced class.

Hmm sounds like you are thinking about the Military as your only option. Frankly I think thats a ****ty reason to join, sign up because you want to and not because its all you have left.

My story: I didn't do well in high school, I also had to take remedial classes when I started college at our local community college "HCC"

Now I'm 4 weeks away from graduating from a private university with a good GPA. Go to college, expand your mind and build the ability to learn man. Nothing good comes easy.

I bet if you were paying for college with your own dough you would do a lot better!

What state regulates two years of post-secondary education for every law enforcement postion?

I know the "country wide" statement is not based on factual information. I call BS.

Perhaps you need to get your information straight.

Join the military and then go to college. You will get a lot of your college paid for by the military. Win-win. You get the perks that you believe the military will give you, your parents get to see you go to college, neither you nor your parents have to go deep into debt to pay for it

If you do go in the military, there is a new GI Bill for those who serve post 9/11 and it's pretty impressive! You would gain lots of experience, LOTS of $$ for college, and it can only help you in the long run.

But as someone else said, only join if it's what you really want, 'cause it's too much of a hassle to deal with people in the military that truly don't want to be in the military. Besides, if you truly want to do it, your parents and family will see you true desire and want you to be happy.

Just as an aside here, I thought I'd tell everyone that I'm typing this out on my new iPhone 3G!

I have wanted to go into the military way before I started this whole process. But I guess Im just confused about which option would be better for me in what I want to do. My ultimate fear is failure, and I dont want to let anybody down in whatever decision I make.

If that's something you've always wanted, I'd suggest joining the military... rather than waiting till you're too old and regretting that you never did. ;)

Ultimately, while it's nice to consider your parents preferences sometimes, it's your future that you're deciding right now... which will effect the rest of your life.
If you let someone down, they'll get over it, if you pass up your dreams because you're trying to please somebody else... you'll always regret it, don't let anybody tell you what to do... you've gotta figure out which would be better for you right now and in the long run!

Personally, I'd recommend the military... don't skip college though, take classes while you're in the military, let them foot the bill!

Also, with the entrance exams... you're going to need to study a lot weather you're joining the military or going to college... if you choose the military, you might want to pick up a ASVAB study guide. ;)

Maybe you are correct, I didn't know if it was country wide or not, sorry should have looked it up.

After looking into it, my state doesn't REQUIRE 60 credits, that is just the departments that I am looking into applying for, sorry for the mistake. I still say go to college and then if you WANT to go into the military after, then join up, or you could go into the National Guard, then you can still go to college, but serve your country as well.
