Is anybody up on this new processor ?
How does it compare to a P-4 ?

As far as I'm concerned, the real gem is that it integrates all sorts of neat power saving features to preserve notebook battery life. The Pentium M is loaded with cache and other goodies that let it execute a much higher number of instructions per clock (IPC) than mobile versions of Intel's Pentium 4, too. It's not necessarily faster than a P4.

OK, thanks Peach. My daughter has her eyes on Dell 8600 laptop and I wondered how it compared as it is only a 1.4 mhz processor.

Oh it is not just your daughter mcsap! ;)
Well................OK I have to admit that my P-II machine is getting old. The Smithsonian called the other day asking how soon I would be willing to part with it.
ANd if my daughter gets her laptop, she isn't sharing !!

Ha Ha Ha That's how it works! Yeah I would archive that PII too.
I just got a new p4m 1.6ghz laptop in my patrol car. I spent a lot of time with these (20 of them) as we set them up. Installing software, running updates, etc.. Then just running the programs we use...
I don't see any difference between the laptop and my home PC which is a p4 2.4ghz.
Granted I havn't loaded any CPU intensive games or anything. It wouldn't be a fair comparison due to video cards and such. The DVD player works great though.
Over all, I am very happy with the M chip. Oh, and the batteries last forever.
