    college debate

while, Ive finnaly decided that Im gonna go to a four year college, and join either the ANG or USCGR.

As far as colleges and majors go, I wanna go to either UNF(University of Northern Florida)in Jacksonville or USF (University of Southern Florida) in Tampa, and major in Criminal justice and probly minor in public admin or bussiness. And try and get a intern position with JSO or TPD ora federal agency.

Now here is the delima(sp) The USCGR has a program that you can go to basic training one summer and go to A school the next, Im trying to find out if the ANG has a similar program, if the ANG does Im gonna join them. SO i was thinking of enlisting this spring and going to basic training next summer, I turn 17 next January and my parents said they would sign. So if I went that route Id go to my tech school before my fresh year of college.

Or I was thinking of just taking a year off after highschool, and get my training done during that, and saving up some extra cash and then going to college.

    any input welcome.

Im kinda leaning towards going to ANG basic training next summer, and then tech school the summer after, but I still have to find out if they do split training. Will be contacting a recruter soon.

    again, any input/insight is appreciated(sp):D

Just remember that if you join the reserves, there is a good chance (especially now days) that you will be called up to serve full time. Dont get it in your head that you will do your weekends and be done with it.

If you join the ANG and get called up, you will probably be going over seas to "fight"

If you join the USCGR and get called up, your chances of going overseas lessen.

Im fine with being deployed if my country needs me.

reson Im leaning towards the ANG is because on their site it lists 100% paid tution where as the USCGR it only lists the Montgomery GI Bill, does anyone know how much they will pay towards my tutition.

    thanks

I took two years off after high school, and it was the best decision of my life. I was able to work fulltime, and save money for paying for college and whatever else. You learn a lot by doing things this way, money management, everything. You can also get the partying out of your system, so that when you do go go to college, you are ready for studying and getting good marks.

In University or College, pick what you will enjoy taking. Don't take something just to take it, because you will regret it forever. It isn't worth the money or your time to take something for the hell of it. In my two years, I should have thought about what I wanted to take more, and now I am paying for it by taking something that I don't enjoy. Nothing wrong with the education, it never hurts, but it isn't what I want.

I should have taken a trade.

I went in the USAF at age 17, about 4 months after I graduated. I took the summer off had some fun, made a little money and than off to Uncle Sam.

ANG has a nice deal with the tuition. Even parents ( like me) like that kind of plan as long as you understand that you could be visiting the Middle East. My 22 yr old neice is with the 101st in Mosul as we speak. Not a place my sister envisioned where her daughter would be as she joined 3 yrs ago for the college tuition bennies.

just checked some tuition prices from different Florida colleges, and the non-resident's tution costs is about 10K more than the resident's. Does anyone know how long you have to live somewhere to be considered a resident?

    *edit*

heres a quote from USF website

    http://www.registrar.usf.edu/Residen...Categories.asp

    exceptions to residency rule

    blah blah blah....

"I am an active member of the Florida National Guard who qualifies under Florida Statutes s.250.10(7) and (8) for tuition assistance."

    REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Your Interstate Transfer Contract, NGB Form 22-5-R-E, if you are an active National Guardsman who has been transferred to Florida from another state,
So I take it that being in the USCGR would be an exception to the residency rule?

Also now my mom is telling me that if I went to a local Comunity college(HolyokeCC) and then transfred to Westfield State College, the last two years of westfield state would be free.

    hmmm, decisions decisions

YOu don't need to take a whole year off. I went to basic and AIT (June thourgh October) and then ahd a couple months off before I started college in January. That's just another optio to consider.

The follonwing summer I went off to get another MOS. A summer later, I went off to ROTC evals. I don't think I had any summers really off working like a "normal guy." I'd have it no other way now. The experiences were invaluable.

When he says taking a year off, I am sure he would be working. When I took my two years off, I worked fulltime...that experience was invaluable to me. It is different for everyone though, some would do better by going straight into school, while a break from class is a good thing.

I did two years off as well.

In those two years I worked full and part-time. I put myself through school (no loans). I learned how to develop a good work ethic and history, improved my interviewing skills, as well as how to write a kick *** resume (some not too bad skills to pick up for future employment prospects).

I had the Montgomery GI bill when I was in.

    Best. Deal. Evar!

I payed in $100/mo for 12 months and got back over $25,000.

    BTW...
If you really want a career in law enforcement, why not go into the Army's CID, or Criminal Investigation Division?

I have been given to understand that those guys can have damn near any LE job they want when they get out, pretty much just for the asking.

Certainly FBI and US Marshals are an obvious horizontal move when you ETS.
