    A thought on self defense.

Just a thought that was rambling through my head as I sit here wating "Most Shocking" on Cou, excuse me, Tru TV.

In this episode, it is people fighting back against their attackers. A lot of the bad guys are armed with firearms, yet an overwhelming majority of them, when their "victims" reacted with a violent counter attack, did not fire their gun. Instead they used their gun as a club.

Now this leads me to wonder just how many bad guys are willing to drop the hammer.

I have long held the belief that if you are a victim of a violent crime, your best bet is to fight back with everything you have.

. . . it is stressed to us every time we do training, fight to win . . fight to survive, that's the only goal and using a loaded functioning gun as a club seems as bit silly, don't it Norm??

Check out Krav Maga (Israeli system of combat / self defence) and things may not appear as silly as it seems;).

    That is my point.

When the bad guys encounter resistance, some seem to forget that they have a gun.

Is this unwillingness to pull the trigger, shock that someone dares to fight back or what?

Not to get away from the topic, but I agree. From the previews of "Tru TV" it doesn't even look like they will be having COPS or Most Shocking on anymore. All I've seen is that Beach Patrol show.

I think it goes to training. LEOs and other law-abiding, weapon-carrying citizens know how to shoot, put rounds through guns regularly, etc. The gun shoots bullets, and you've done it enough to be comfortable doing that.

The thugs of the world know a gun shoots bullets, but do they put as many rounds through it as a LEO or a Norm? Doubtful. Do they go to a range regularly? Doubtful. Do they have weeks worth of situational training, shoot/don't shoot, etc.? Doubtful. They're using it as a device for intimidation, but when the stuff hits the fan, they resort to more primitive fighting techniques because they're not trained to use it for its intended purpose.

I didn't even know about this. I can't believe they won't have COPS or Most Shocking. The Beach Patrol Show is just a marathon, I looked it up here; http://www.courttv.com/schedule/index.html.

Back to the original thread, could it just be the caliber of the criminal, no pun intended. I mean it seems like must if not all are just low life losers who are not very intelligent, so my guess would be when they encounter resistance they just go into fight or flight mode, because they have no training that kicks in such as an l.e.o. or a serviceman would have. I have no idea if that's anywhere close to the actual reason, thats just my two cents.

Edit: MDEMT you replied while I was typing, I totally agree with you on it's the level of training the individual has. You just have a much better worded response.

Could be that these mental giants don't know how to use their weapon and in the heat realise they have no idea how to take off the safety or that they don't even have bullets, either in some crazy idea that if they get busted with an unloaded gun they will not get as stronger penalty, or because they spent all their babies Momma's wages on drugs.

I would imagine that more of those are unloaded than we think. Crooks are smart enough to know that you pull the trigger during that robbery, you're looking at life behind bars or the death penalty. Not worth it over $50.

I think it comes down to two things, fear and shock. Criminals know that people tend to fear guns, which makes it such a great tool in crime. But criminals generally use it as show... to intimidate. Even if it is loaded, they dont plan on using it.

If someone has enough stones to attack them, they freak out. Logically you dont expect someone who you have at gunpoint to attack you (which is why LEO's are taught to "fight to survive" or attack the weapon). Even if the turd had planned to use the weapon, it takes his mind to long to process the idea that an unarmed person is attacking them when they have a gun, so they naturally revert to their instincts, which is to swing and club with the gun (using it as a tool).

Just my psychology degree speaking, lol. But who the hell knows.

Honestly.. I think quite a few thugs expect their victim's to back down, and submit. When one fights back, I think they become shocked, and just don't know how to react.
