Illegal drinking

On a Dutch forum someone wrote that it is prohibited in New York
during the the new year celebration to drink on the street.
Not only alcohol, but also water. :eek:

Drinking alcohol on the street is also illegal in many parts of Amsterdam.
But is it true that drinking of water is also illegal in New York ? :confused:

I don't think so, I have translated the original posting for you.

Last christmas we had an American visitor.
My mother wanted to experience the new year celebration on The Dam*.
Our visitor told us of the celebration in New York and that that the most "overrated and boring" celebration of all.
It is still prohibited to drink on the street (everything, not only alcohol), therefore she stood for 5 hours really dry .
And if you leave your beautiful spot then you can't reclaim it.
She could not se the fire work because of all high building.
Afther the the count down everybody went home or to the pub.

*The Dam is a square in the centere of Amsterdam

Toevallig hadden wij afgelopen kerst een Amerikaanse in huis. Mijn moeder wil de nieuwjaarsviering altijd eens op de Dam meemaken. Zij vertelde van de viering in New York en dat dat het meest "overrated and boring" feest van allemaal was.
Het is namelijk nog verboden om te drinken op straat (alles, niet alleen alcohol), dus je staat rustig 5 uur echt droog te wachten en als je je mooie plek verlaat dan ben je hem kwijt. Het vuurwerk zie je niets van omdat er allemaal hoge gebouwen voor staan en na het aftellen verdwijnt iedereen naar huis of naar de kroeg om eens even goed te drinken.

Perhaps they meant that you couldn't drink anything with alcohol, including mixed drinks, spirits, or the heavy hitting stuff
