    GM Protection Plan

I recently purchased a new truck. Got a letter from GM wanting me to purchase extended service coverage protecting me against the potential high costs of parts and labor for repairs to my vehicle if something happens to it.

Was wondering if anyone else has purchased this plan? If it seems like it is worth the money?

They have 3 plans to chose from covering 48 mos/72,000 miles: Basic Guard($870), Value Guard($1,190) and Major Guard($1,340).

It would pretty much cover everything in the truck except normal maintenance items such as bulbs, tires, upholstery, moldings, brake drums, batteries etc...

I know repairs are costly to vehicles, it would seem my normal warranty would cover most of the items as well.

    Just wanted opinions, thanks.

It sounds to me like they don't have much confidence in their product.

Does the extra warranty start AFTER your factory warranty expires at 3/36 ?

    WHat is the deductible ?

What is excluded BESIDES normal wear and tear items? A/C , trans, rear end ,stereo etc ?

Can you transfer the warranty if you sell the truck ?

How long will you keep the truck ( what no 4wd in Mich ? )

Can you "activate" the warranty down the road , say anytime between now and when the 3/36 runs out ?

If yes to the above, will it cost more to do it later ?

I bought new Express van July of 02 but declined their offer. I did accept 6 yrs of interest free financing though !

Call and ask how much to replace a tranny, then decide if it might be worth it.

Understand you are actually purchasing insurance.

Dan hit the nail on the head. can't expect much from General Motors, and you sure as hell can't expect anything from Chrysler/Dodge. Ford F150 longest lasting, best selling truck in america. Have you driven a Ford lately? lol

lol, I think ford might have a hit on their hands with the new Fseries, looks great and interior is 10x better than the old one(bland would be an understatement for the last gen of F-series) plus they redesigned the 5.4 V8. im thinkin it will do good. Might be a close battle with Nissans new Titan, their first full size, looks great inside and out.

Chevy pissed me of when they killed the Fbody in 02, and they pissed me off even more when they began to stick SS badges on cars that dont deserve that name. Like the silverado SS, it should have been a 2wd, reg cab short bed, with the LS6, not a awd, 6.0, extended cab turd. At least they kinda improved the current Monte Carlo and Impala SS's by adding the supercharger to the 3.8(which I admit is a great engine)

    The warranty would start immediately.

    Deductible is $100.

Nothing is excluded in the Major Guard, except normal wear and tear items.

The warranty can be transfered if I sold truck. I plan on keeping truck over 5 years. Don't have the need for 4-wheel drive, all highway driving.

If I activate warranty before 8,000 miles its the prices I listed already. If I wait till over 8,000 and less than 15,000 miles the prices go up $400.

OK, you plan to keep it 5 yrs. How many miles per year do you think ? 8K 10 k 12k ? Worst case of the above choices is 60,000 miles. I ssupect that MOST of the major components will last longer than 60,000 miles. I have a 90 Lumina with 45K on it, only replaced the alternator. My 92 Acclaim sdn, 79K, spent $500 over the last 4 yrs to maintain it.

Me myself and I , would not get the warranty. I didn't JUly of 02 when I got my Express LT van. Why pay for a warranty that will be in effect at the same time as your "free" factory warranty ? Didn't you pay for the 3/36 warranty....YES you did. You going to pay again ? See how the truck is near the end of the 3/36, if it is a piece of crap, get the warranty. If not, dont. That is exactly what I plan to do.

    I bought a 1999 camry in 1999. I bought the 100k mile warranty. What a rip! I'm at 85k miles and I didn't need it. Also mine was non-transferable.

I have always had bad luck with vehicles, 5 fords, 2 chevy, 1 nissan, 2 toyotas.

As long as you keep up with maintainance then you should not have to many problems. If you do after 36k miles don't bring it back to the GM dealership. However, out of all of my cars and trucks GM has always treated me the best!

Cars and trucks should last at least 100K miles w/p to many problems beside maintainance. If not, we live and learn.

All of the automakers offer these "Service Plans" or Extended Warranties.

I did purchase one for my truck. It was used, and only a 30 day warranty. So I spent the money and bought the plan. Have not had to use it yet. But I think of it as insurance just in case something happens. Although, I did get mine for cost. My wife used to work for the dealership, so it was not too expensive.

Personally, I wouldn't buy it. I was offered it on all the vehicles I have bought over the years (even the used ones), but declined.
It seems like everything that went wrong with my cars was not covered anyway.
