I hate Bass-Pro now. I went there Saturday to meet someone and go shooting at their range. When I got there, I expected to be stopped by the people at the front since I was carrying a backpack (it had all my shooting stuff in it). The greeters just said "Hi" and let me go right in. I went back to the range and asked if I was in the right place since their signs all said it was the rife range but didn't say anything about pistols. They said that I was and asked if I had a gun in the bag. I said I did. They then asked if I had gotten it locked when I came in the store. I said it has a lock on it. They said that wasn't good enough and I would have to go back and get one of the stores locks put on it. I told them I was a Police Officer and I have never had to do that anywhere. They said it didn't matter and I would have to get one of their locks put on it. I said "Okay" and went back to the front of the store. I found one of the greeters and told them that I needed a lock. They started pulling one out and while they did that, I asked them why they made Police Officers lock theirs up. The greeters said that they don't. They just need to see a badge and that's fine. I showed them my badge and told them that the people back at the range said it didn't matter. They said not to worry about it and that all I need to do is just show a badge when I come in from now on. I then walked all the way back to the range and was again asked if I had a lock. I told them I did not because I was a Police Officer and I didn't need one. The range guys then said okay and let it go.
I will not be frequenting their store anymore and I am tempted to write a letter to the company's home office for the following reasons...
1. They are a sporting goods store. Of all places, this should be one where a sportsmen should be free to carry his/her weapon. If he/she has the appropriate license, they should most definitely be allowed to carry it.
2. I even had my weapon locked up. Why isn't that good enough? Ignoring reason 1 above, why should anyone be forced to use the stores locks if the weapon is already safely locked? That's just uneccesary weapons handling that does not need to occur right there in the entry way where there are other people around. Heck, that kind of weapons safety is taught in the first few minutes of a gun safety course.
3. Their range personnel were rude and apparantly not concerned about firearms safety. They were rude because they made me go back to the front of the store even after I advised them that I was a Police Officer. They were not concerned about firearms safety because of wanting me to walk back through the store with a weapon not secured by their means and have more gun handling up at the front like I mentioned in reason 2.
I think I'll stick to the department range or my normal outdoor range for a while.
