I'll have to second the suggestion wild800 had on Ferndale California. Spent a nite there late last Oct. Two very good restaurants, and maybe three motels. My third visit, and recommend it very much. The county road out to Cape Mendecino is great, go with a full gas tank and a camera, very wild ocean beach. Swimming and surfing not recommended, but spectacular view. Follow the road thru Petrolia and over the mtns into the Redwood forests. Trailers not suggested on this winding road.
North of Eureka is a town called Orick on Hwy 101. Go just 2 miles north of Orick, to a roadside cafe called Rolf's - best German food in the area.
CA Hwy 34 from Hwy 101 south of Ferndale at Fortuna is a scenic trip to Red Bluff across the Coast Range. Again, no trailers due to winding road, and have a full gas tank. Just a logging road with asphalt, occasionally a center stripe. The eastern 30 miles of 34, east slopes to Red Bluff, is curved and supered for driving with both hands, a great place to wring out a sports car, or a Crown Vic if you work near there.
Closer to home -
If you have a week and a car, just throw some gear into the car and leave. Destination - what ever way you want to go. No plans. Take off your watch an dturn off the cell phone No destination permitted just stop where you end up and when (as early or late) you feel like it. Don't tell anyone you are going to visit them, as that will tie you to someone else's sked. Stay off the freeways and turnpikes; secondary 2 lane state hwys and county roads are the way to see places. The key is to not plan, or set a sked.
Try it thru the Adirondacks, avoid the Thruway and take the back roads across Vermont, NH, into Maine.
