It varies and a lot of the time, it depends what is coming up next.
Ie, last Friday, it was 10-11 AM, I had been up since 1500 the previous day, and was tired, batteries fading when I was checking on some dive things. Get home, have two shots of scotch and wouldn't you know it.........while the batteries are reading drained and I feel like I'm about the flip of a switch to dreamland, there is still power in the circuits and I'm still awake. I finally decide to go to sleep about 1230.....and am frustrated when I wake up about 1600.
But Friday is a special case, anyhow. First of all, it is "my chance" to rejoin the rest of the country in the end of the week, rejoin the day people and often, there is so much drive to push the limit (of course, it would help if the tv line up was any good). Secondly, since I don't work the midshift on Friday, don't have classes, don't have any committments, it is much easier to go for broke.
But to the question directly: how do I know when I'm too tired? When there are latent images in my vision. Ie, I look at something and the image seems to drag as I look at something else.

(During the 30's, a fleet sub's fuel got contaminated and they had to sail to the nearest port, conserving what diesal they had. When they reached port, the engineer came to the captain with a measuring cup of diesal. "That's all that's left of our fuel, Sir!"
