The silliest cop show ever produced

So last week I'm sitting at home flipping channels, and happen to stumble across Grimm which is a relatively new show out on NBC. Basically it's set in Portland, Oregon. The main character is Detective Burkart of the PPB. Burkhart learns somewhere along the line that he is actually descended from an ancient line of guardians from eastern europe and that magical beings and the occult are involved in a rash of heinous crimes he's been investigating in Oregon. Making matters worse, it's hinted that Burkart's precinct Captain is involved with some evil royal family in the magical realm in Europe. Anyway the acting is actually pretty good. I know most police officers don't watch cop shows, but I just thought this show was hilarious watching the one episode.

Don't you know this show was based on the life and times of RDS?

That is a weird show. Just enough fantasy that you can't really relate it to a police show. It's filmed here in Portland and they use our guys, police cars, etc. as extras. I can generally recognize most of the places in the show, however the detective division stumps me. It looks like something out of the old Barney Miller show.

The big building where they have staged fights, dances, etc. is an old abandoned Publisher's Paper Mill that was closed down in the very early 70's. The "woods" scenes are filmed at Forest Park, which is a huge primitive park here.

I do believe the part of the captain being involved in some evil family is probably based on fact. I've worked for several like that.....

I can picture RDS with his instant witty humor and cynical observations battling mythical creatures while trying to hide his status as a Grimm from his supervisor... the one things these shows never explain that I want to know, is how do you explain that on a police report? "Hey Detective what's the progress on case=whatever" "Uh well Sarge, funny story about that, it's closed" "uhh ok so who did it, how good a case we have against him" "well........ the perpetrator...... a giant bear! wildlife did it, case closed, no human involved!" that would be more entertaining then the actual plot of the show itself.

    Police Squad.

Mayor: Drebin, I don't want anymore trouble like you had last year on the South Side. Understand? That's my policy.

Frank: Yes. Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That's *my* policy.

Mayor: That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of "Julius Caesar", you moron! You killed 5 actors! Good ones.

Now THAT was a good movie! not only did it star leslie neilsen, but I was giving a standing ovation everytime OJs character got hurt. which was a big running gag that OJ was always getting hurt in that movie.

I watch cop shows on a regular basis and so do a fair number of my co-workers.

Having said that, I would not call Grimm a "cop show." I would call it a sci-fi/fantasy show which features a cop as a main character.

Just like I wouldn't refer to "The Dresden Files" as a show about a private investigator...

Yep, they're not real like "The X Files"! I bet J. Edgar is rolling in his grave over that one!

The only cop show I've ever found the least bit interesting was Reno 911....

Which show would you say has the most accurate portrayal of a police department?

None that I know of. I've yet to see a suspect interview yet that would hold up in court. The most hilarious are the ones where their lawyer sits there and lets them confess to the police.

I saw a 'COPS' episode once where the officer yelled "taser, taser, tase.." and then the suspect faceplanted with two probes in his back just as his hands flew into the air. It was condensed into a 10 minute segment with no profanity or paperwork but it looked cool. Even though in real life the next 5 hours was spent getting a warrant for a DUI blood draw, med treatment, the DUI test, the download of the taser UOF report, the Felon ID tag capture along with the taser cartridge, the trip to jail and the search - they captured the best part - face plant to the ground and it was real. I'd bet that segment was what the officer talked about too and made up for the next five hours of adrenalin come-down.

In real life, what I'd like to see is a show like my near jury duty where the convicted killer got his death sentence tossed (but not the conviction) over faulty jury instructions and ten years later all the investigators get to testify again during the penalty phase about the douchebag killer and it all has to match and God forbid they got put on the Brady list in those ten years. Or got out of law enforcement.

I was just on that Investigation Discovery show, Silent Voices, Buried Secrets on an old homicide. I had to smile how they said one of the suspects flunked the polygraph and then told us all this information. Yeah, after 7 hours of me convincing him I was new best friend in the world.... Granted, the show was focused more on the victim than the investigation, but still.....

The cops here they used on COPS weren't the brightest and best either. I cringed at some of the stuff I saw them do. One guy was made to look like a folk hero and he's one of the 10 dumbest people on the department. I have no idea who picked the ones for that show.

WOW THAT WAS YOU ON THAT EPISODE? I actually saw that episode several weeks ago. I love your mustache, in a non-creepy sort of way

RDS lent them his time, not his car.
