World Naked Bike Ride rolls through town Saturday night
Portland bicyclists are about to get, ahem, a little cheeky.
The annual World Naked Bike Ride is Saturday night as thousands of bicyclists ride au natural through parts of Southeast and downtown Portland. It’s one of the largest naked bike rides in 70 northern hemisphere cities this month. A southern hemisphere naked bike ride is planned in mid-March.
Portland police expect about 8,000 people to doff their duds (or most of them) and pedal through town. Police are encouraging people to wear helmets and shoes, and to have a good light on their bikes.
Portland has hosted a World Naked Bike Ride since 2004. This year’s event is part of Pedalpalooza, a monthlong regional celebration of all things bicycle.
This year’s ride begins at 10 p.m. at Southeast Salmon Street and Water Avenue. The ride is free (although donations are being encouraged)
Before that, a Sunny Naked Ride II is planned from 1 to 3:30 p.m. beginning at Coe Circle near 3900 N.E. Glisan St. It’s also clothing optional.
The World Naked Bike Ride began in 2004 as an international protest for peace. At first, the ride was seen as a way for bicyclists across the globe to protest oil dependency. The message has shifted a bit during the years to one focusing on cycling advocacy and celebrating the power of the human body.
