    New guy

Hello everyone. New guy here from MN. Just a citizen of the good USA and like to read up on laws & such. Plus I am a car guy and every now and again might have a question for an officer. No I am not the guy with the black taillights and air bags pulled to put video games in. In fact I think those guys that do that to a street driven vehicle make a bad name for us enthusiasts who try to abide by the law.

Everybody thinks the Chevy 283 was first....

The Chevy 283 V8 was introduced in 1957 and used up through 1961. GM developed the engine by increasing the bore of the Chevy 265 V8 which was first produced in 1955. The 283 was manufactured with several different carburetor setups such as a single 2 barrel, a 4 barrel, a 2 x 4 barrel setup and an impressive fuel injected model. The fuel injected version of the 283 in 1957 that was used in the Corvette produced an amazing 1 horsepower per cubic inch which was almost unheard of at the time coming from a factory built engine.

    __________________________________________________ ___________________________________
The engine family from which all Chevy V8s from the big blocks to today's LS7 and LS9 evolved is the 265/283 small block family. Of the three engines in this family, two of them, the 265 and the 283, have gone down in automotive history. The first of this family was the 265 in 1955. The 283, famous for being one of the first engines to make 1 hp per cubic inch is also famous for being the evolutionary stepping stone that would give rise to later small blocks and to the “W” blocks which would later give rise to the Chevy big blocks.

    __________________________________________________ _____________________________________

But....The Chrysler 354 was a 354 cu in (5.8 L) version produced in 1956. Bore was 3.9375 in (100 mm) with a 3.625 in (92 mm) stroke. It was used in the 1956 New Yorker, Imperial, and Chrysler 300B. Dodge used a modified version of this engine in the 1957 D-501. The engine was rated at 340hp. An optional 355hp version was available, making it the first American V-8 to be rated at one horsepower per cubic inch....

SO , the 1957 Chevy was the first V8 to MAKE one horse per cube while the 1956 Chrysler was the first V8 to make MORE than one horse per cube.
