Hello everyone.

I'm a lecturer in criminal justice at Penn State and have been teaching the policing classes here for several years. I've never worked as a cop (unless you count three years as a student auxiliary officer when I was an undergrad) but, because of my profession, I have worked with a lot of cops and studied with some of the leading policing researchers (Herman Goldstein and Steve Mastrofski). I have a law degree and a Ph.D. (my dissertation was about organized crime in New York). Despite being an ivory tower guy, many of my former students who are now LEO have told me that my class was great preparation for their careers. I always try to blend the "real world" with the academic side of things.

I joined RealPolice.net because I'd like to start some forum discussions here on topics my students and I are covering in class. I'll ask my students to participate in these forums and hope that many of you will join in. I think your insights will be invaluable.

Hi, Howard. I'm a former CJ professor myself (including full-time dept head, instructor and adjunct instructor). Probably the best venue for the discussions you referenced above is our "Criminal Justice Degree Question/Answers" sub-forum (click here). Also, please do us a favor and help your students realize that while this forum is intended for discussions about LE (to include receiving relevant questions from CJ students), it is not a place that is intended for students to post their homework/essay questions on and get their assignments completed for them. We've had issues here in the past (I've even caught some of my own students doing so back when I was teaching), so perhaps by having a professor here to serve as a mentor you can help ensure that doesn't occur with your students.

Thanks, Kimble. I will heed your advice. I only plan to use these forums a few times a semester and to closely monitor discussions. For instance, we're finishing up a couple weeks of lectures about the due process revolution and subsequent retreat from it and it would benefit the students to hear some real world perspectives on issues like pretext stops, etc. These will definitely no be discussions where students can have a Realpolice member do their homework for them. Plus, my students don't have assignment; I guess it's one of the consequences of teaching at a mega-U with large classes is that I don't have time to assign and grade homework... sad but unfortunately true.

Also, I don't expect to just take from this site without giving... I'm certainly available to anyone who would like advice about criminal justice education, etc.

I'm looking forward to my time here at Realpolice.

I went there from 2000-2004 as a crim major. Were you there then?

I hate Baseball lol. Steelers are my babies with the Penguins a close second. Trying to get into the new Pittsburgh arena football team also (Power) but it's no NFL.

"Crim" is what they used to shorten the degree, since Criminology is rather lengthy.
