Hello from VA, soon to be Alaska!

    Hello all,

Just signed up yesterday and thought I'd introduce myself!

I'm a former MP (UK), moved to the US with the wife in 2009 (she's American). Started off in Fairfax County VA, but moving to Alaska next week for a change of scenery. Pretty excited about the move to be honest. Love the outdoors. Still passionate about law enforcement, even though I'm not with an agency. Thinking of applying for the local police as soon as I'm granted US citizenship.

Joined up to get some advice, opinions and generally chat with like-minded people during my downtime.

    Cheers,

    B-Rad

B-Rad, Welcome to RP from the Florida Panhandle! Glad you found our little home on the internet and thanks for the intro. Hope your move to Alaska is not too crazy, and I vote with mcsap, bring lots of long underwear! I've only ever flown through Alaska, but I definitely hope to visit someday as I've heard it's just absolutely beautiful (although VERY cold!)

Hello B-Rad, welcome from a Retired IrishCop in Australia.

Lots of you blokes heading to The Land Down Under, ex Plod mainly to South Australia Police and Western Australia Police and ex UK Military to the Australian Defence Forces.

Good luck in Alaska and I'm sure your service in the RMP will stand you in good stead.

When you settle in, can you say hello Sarah Palin for me and wish her well in her run for the Presidency.

    Cheers.

Haha OfficerKelly, yes I'll definitely say hello to Ms Palin for ya! From what I understand she's not the sharpest tool in the box. She'd probably ask me if I'm from Australia, which is what I seem to get asked more often not... people aren't that great with foreign accents over here ;)

How do you like Oz? Been there long?

Oh, I don't know mate, you don't become Govenor of a State by not being 'The sharpest tool in the box' but in any case, it's not her mind I'm interested in.

I have heard from Australian's who have visited the US how surprised they were at how insular American society is, in that some were surprised that Australian's spoke English.

I hear the quality of life is pretty great out there. Yeah, America can be a bit insular at times. Only last week I was asked by somebody "Oh, you're from England... what language do they speak in England?". Hahaha.

Those are your run-of-the-mill civvies. Education system is failing them. But I'm pretty sure US Cops are a touch smarter than your average bear. They certainly seem to have a bit more common sense anyway. I'm hoping to get my application into the City Police next year. Failing that, State Troopers.

How did you find working for the Fuzz in Australia?

I also find that when some Americans refer to England, they actually mean Britain or the United Kingdom. An example would be where they refer to the English Army and are confused when told that England does not have an Army.

Yes, you are quite right in relation to Police Officers having a broader knowledge of world geography and events and I also found the same with the US Military Personnel.

I have met a number of US Police Officers through the World Police Games and also the International Police Association.

I find the US Policing system facinating with their various jurisdictions of City Police, Sheriff's Departments, State Police and Federal Police. They also seem to get hired and fired at the will of local polilticians.

Policing is the same all over, same ****, different accent but having said that, I enjoyed the job and was proud to be a member and I retired in good stead.

The same applied to my service in the Australian Military.

In my view Australia is a great country, I just hope we can learn from the mistakes of other countries and we don't allow the politicians to stuff it up.

    Cheers.
