New member from New York City

    How's it going everyone,

My name is Christian, i reside in New York City and took the NYPD exam recently (exam # 1305). One of my dreams since I was in Junior High School was to be a Police Officer. But i postponed that and went on to get my Masters Degree (graduated in May).

My NYPD test score is pretty low (79.1), but today I got a letter saying the standard "Congratulations" with my list number.

Since I received this letter I got a bit excited because im thinking this could be the first step of getting into the academy, but how are my chances with my score. I know I have to wait and I don't mind doing so.

    ~Christian

Christian, Welcome to RP from the Florida Panhandle! Glad you found our site, thanks for the intro, and congrat's to you on your "Congrat's" letter! There's tons of great info on here and many NYPD officers are members here. So, dig right in and really explore the space! And don't forget to hang around and let us know how the process is going for you.

thank you for the welcome welcome. My father has a home in Port St.Lucie, you live in a beautiful warm state. You guys are lucky that you dont get feet and feet of snow haha. And I will do as much research as I can

I have been reading a few threads and there is so much information to process, a bit overwhelming hah. But let me give you guys/gals a bit more information about myself.

I am 26 years old (turning 27 in May), I have graduated with a Sociology Degree back in 2006, worked for a year after school and decided to get my Masters in Social Welfare. I received that degree in May 2010 and have been working at random jobs but I know these office jobs arent for me. This is a big reason why I want to join the NYPD, to protect my community and be the best cop that I can (I know i know, I watched too many commercials but its the truth).

I am not a great test taker, hence my 79 on the NYPD exam. But I hope I can show my passion and commitment to be a law enforcement officer during an interview. I just hope I am given the opportunity to get to that step.

Welcome! Not sure how many took the test but the score starts at 110 and goes backwards. So everyone who scored 80-110 are ahead of you. Re-take the test when you can just to shoot for a higher score. Sometimes DCAS screws up and starts processing higher scores from the next test before they finis the low numbers.

Good luck....but just be aware you have YEARS till you see an academy....likely 18 months to 2 years.

Thank you for all replies and I don't mind the wait. But if I don't retake the exam will i still move to the next step? Or does the NYPD only wants applicants with scores 80+?

I just went on nypdrecruit.com and called 212-Recruit just to get some more information. I told them my score and list number and was told the same exact thing from both the online chat i had with a officer and with the person that I spoke to over the phone.

Both explained to me that it wont make a difference if I retake the exam since the last exam I took is good for four years and they will use that score and list number. As well they told me that they will eventually call me to make the next step in the process but it can take up to two and a half years.

Also I spoke to a good friend of mine who is a NYPD officer and he told me the same thing, he also said im a retard for scoring so low :(

Well I guess I just have to wait now and be patient. People say good things are worth waiting for hahaha, so will see what happens. If i get any new information I will share with you guys/gals

    Christain,

Forget what you hear on the phone. You are hearing textbook answers. Listen to somebody in teh know. While every score gets processed, when you get processed may vary. I assure you, those who scored higher on the next two exams will get called and processed before you. I will also say a 79 is not a good score on such an easy exam, especially coming from somebody with a masters. I hope that does not include the 5 point residencey credit. Take the next available test......trust me.

Ok I understand, I just went on the NYPD recruit website and see I can take the test this month, I will do some studying before I go in. Hopefully I will score higher and even though I have a masters degree doesn't mean I am a good test taker. But thank you for your input, I will let you know how everything turns out after I retake the exam

    Hey Christian.

Im in the same situation as you are, just finishing up my Masters soon. Turning 25. I scored 101 witht the residency credit and am 59 on the list. It will probably take around 18months i hear before we get contacted. I'm not sure exaclty how it works, but from wha tI have read so far on these boards even if you scored lower aren't they going to clear that list in order before they move on to the next one? My theory is you won't be so far behind unless they only pull ppls above 80 or something from several tests first. I would think that taking it again will set you back another year or so because it would be a later exam number. I could be wrong.

Also would you happen to know if its possible to go on a ride along? I would love to get that opportunity to see first hand how everything works, i am very interested.
