Hello everyone,

My name is Brittany, I reside in beautiful NH and I am 17 years of age. Becoming a police officer has been a dream I have wanted to fullfill ever since I was about 10. Just last year I went participated in a police observation program (ride-a-long as others call it) with the local police department. I loved it. Even though it only lasted three hours, I knew when it was over that becoming a police officer was indeed what I wanted to do with my life. At school I am participating in School-To-Career program with our SRO and I am learining a lot of great information from him (he is the one who told about this website). I also am currently going through the National Guard Enlistment process. After I graduate this year, I will be going to BCT to become an MP.

So, there's a little about myself. I hope that I can learn much more from visiting this wonderful website.

I commend you on your decision to serve your country and further your Law Enforecment quest at the same time.

If you aren't aware , there is an opportunity for honroably discharged veterans to receive additional points on their score for police/governemtn testing purposes. As far as I know , it does not apply for Guard or reserve duty. Only full time active duty. You should inquire as to how that applies in NH. it may be different. Any extra points you can get will never hurt.

mcsap has a good point, although it varies state to state. Here, it's not so much whether you joined the guard, but how many months of active duty you served. If you were to be deployed to a war zone for over a year, here you would deservedly get the veterans points.

Don't speak to a recruiter about information pertaining a civil service-type hiring process. When I was enlisting in the Army Reserve some 8 years ago, I found my recruiter well-qualified to answer military type questions and not so much questions pertaining to civil service positions outside of the military. Remember, their goal is to get you to enlist.

Also, if law enforcement in the military is what you want to use as a stepping stone to civilian law enforcement, check into the Army Reserve in Massachusetts since you live in NH (I am originally from Maine). The 342d Military Police Detachment is a "law and order" specific unit (there are only a FEW of these that exist in the entire Army Reserve), and their mission is to conduct law enforcement primarily as opposed to 99% of other MP units being combat support units that primarily do not conduct law enforcement missions.

Being a former drilling Army Reserve MP with a tour in Iraq, I can tell you that your exposure to actual law enforcement in a MP combat support unit will be none or next to none. I hope this helps you and welcome to RP!
